When one remembers that the left is often indirect in working toward their goals, one can take a look at a wide range of their actions, and see their statements put into action.  I think “Cash for Clunkers” may be such an example.  It’s a plan that looks good to many, and is obviously popular, but there are consequences that seem to fit some of their other goals.  Let’s take a look.  My first observation is a bit unrelated to the premise, but I think it’s important all it’s own.

They planned to have this program for four months.  It ran out of cash in four days!  And this is the same government that KNOWS how much their single payer plan will cost?  They can’t even estimate how to fund a four-month plan, but they can plan for decades of health care expenditures?  This is laughable.  Again, the cheerleaders at the MSM are simply saying that the program is “SOOOOO SUCCESSFUL!”

The cars traded in on the program are to be destroyed.  Now, in normal situations, a trade in will either go on the dealer lot, go to auction, or go to the junkyard.  In any of those situations, others will have the opportunity to benefit from this car, either by driving it, or by purchasing the usable parts from it.  When the car is destroyed, there is little benefit.  Or is there?  I wrote here about how the new Secretary of Transportation wants to “coerce” people out of their cars and onto public transportation.  Here are some quotes…

The moderator of the press club event asked LaHood: “Some in the highway-supporters motorist groups have been concerned by your livability initiative. Is this an effort to make driving more torturous and to coerce people out of their cars?”

LaHood answered: “It is a way to coerce people out of their cars.

And some more…

Lahood then made a joke about the fact that some conservatives believe that the way he wants to use the Department of Transportation represents an increased government intrusion in people’s lives.

“Some conservative groups are wary of the livable communities program, saying it’s an example of government intrusion into people’s lives,” said the moderator. “How do you respond?”

“About everything we do around here is government intrusion in people’s lives,” said LaHood. “So have at it.”

“So have at it.”  Pretty cavalier attitude regarding manipulating the public into a pre-arranged goal, isn’t it?

In the “Cash for Clunkers” plan, how many cars will be taken out of the market?  How many fewer Americans will be able to own a used car due to this?  New cars that are to be made to the messiah’s specifications will be more and more expensive.  To reach the mileage and emissions goals, more, newer technology will have to go in, increasing the cost.  With so many used cars sent to the crusher, where will people go for a car when they cannot afford the newer ones?  Funded with $1,000,000,000, the initial plan was to scrap 250,000 cars.  The congress wants to add another $2,000,000,000 to the plan, does that mean a total of 750,000 cars?   How many people will that “coerce” onto public transportation?

Am I reaching here?  Quite possibly, however, if we look at what the left says, and compare it to what they do, some interesting patterns emerge.

MattI believe that future generations should have the same opportunities that myself, and those that came before me, had. My parents taught me that I could do anything I wanted to do. I don’t want to have to tell my daughter, “You can do whatever the government tells you to do.” We are at a crossroads in this country; are we going to be free, or are we going to be slaves to the nanny state. I choose freedom.

Mr. Lahood (is that your real name, or did you catch that growing up?)…I don’t want your stupid program. I’d rather your boss just give deserving Americans (that means, those of us who friggin’ paid income tax last year) a $4,500 tax break. I can do a lot for the economy with $4,500…I can help keep that butcher at Publix in his job; I can help keep the mechanic who’ll be rebuilding the caliper on my 1998 F-150 tomorrow working for a little while longer (yeah, I said 1998, pal…and I’ll be saying it for another 10 years); I can keep that guy taking my kids’ tickets at the movie theater standing there for a bit longer; I can keep the gas station around the corner in business for probably another year, the way I burn through gas carting my kids to ballet and baseball and basketball and gymnastics and driving into the reeking city of death to work every day.

So…anytime you want to get intrusive in someone’s life, I invite you down to my place (I’d tell you where it is, but Janet Napolitano already knows). And you’d better bring better stuff than that weak-ass snark you told the press club, because that crap won’t play when you butt heads with me, you bugger.

Lahood is a freakin’ idiot. It’s because of bureaucrats like him that this country and our government are all screwed up. Great article.

  • theLibertyPen August 3, 2009 at 10:37 pm

And where exactly are they getting the $4500 for the rebates? The government does not generate income or positive cash flow. Oh, that’s right, the taxpayers. I guess their version of success is different than mine; ran out of money, the initial logistics and specifications for what vehicles would be acceptable was not agreed upon until late because of miscommunication; you’re taking perfectly good vehicles, which in itself is a useful commodity, off the street and selling some of the parts to China; and you purvey yet again another reason why government should stay out of the private sector. This is the Bizarro realm.

@ Dr. Dave, well said sir. Of course, you are in “flyover country.” Your needs, wants, and opinions are irrelevant. Big Brother Barry knows better, and will take over all of your important decisions. At first, it’ll just by limiting, and then eliminating your options, but in the end, it’s the government plantation for us all. They’ll just CALL IT SOMETHING ELSE and refer to it as a “livable community.”

@ Liberty Pen, when you take a look at the fact that the originally wanted $4 billion to scrap 1 million cars, you see the motivation. It’s freaking transparent all right! Most of these cars would have been re-sold, either on the dealer lot, or at auction. Someone would have gotten to drive them, but not now.

You are absolutely correct when you talk about the tax payer being burdened with this. With interest, of course, because all they can do now is print more and more funny money. Our kids will get to write the Chicoms a big fat check for this in the end.

It surprises me that Ray Lahood is acting this way. He is from my home state of Illinois and my wife actually went to high school with his daughter and she knows the man. I mean really knows him. So this is strange to she and I that he is behaving this way. It is very unlike him. Either he sold out to Obama or they have something on him. Or both.

But in reality, LaHood has been a team player in the past and he actually presided over Clinton’s impeachment. However he never really took a stand on any substantial legislation concerning transportation. Maybe Obama saw him as a safe pick that would prove he was bipartisan.

    My grammar sucks…

    “…is strange to her and I…” or “…to us…”

    Jeez, and I call myself a writer…

I still don’t understand the concept of taking money from taxpayers, then giving it back to them to stimulate the economy. Why take it from them in the first place and lose a huge percentage of it in the administrative and bureaucratic process? I agree with Dr. Dave, just give me a $4500 tax break and I’ll help stimulate the economy!

  • theLibertyPen August 4, 2009 at 2:32 pm

“I still don’t understand the concept of taking money from taxpayers, then giving it back to them to stimulate the economy.”

You are describing Keynesian economics, another utter failure. I have written about this and there are several articles out there that say the same; the government cannot infuse itself within an economic system because it cannot generate a positive flow of capital – to do so requires taking it from someone first. Which is us.

  • Matt August 4, 2009 at 11:22 pm

Keynesian economics is a nation killer, pure and simple. If memory serves, it’s why the US dollar has lost over 90% of it’s value since the ends of WWII. Is that correct, Liberty Pen?
