Newsbusters reported that, according to the National Center for Public Policy Research, Michael Mann, a prominent figure in the ClimateGate scandal received $541,184 in Porkulus funding.  Mann, creator or the infamous and discredited “Hockey Stick Chart,” is currently under investigation by Penn State University for questionable scientific practices related to his AGW research.

Here’s, more from the NCPPR

In the face of rising unemployment and record-breaking deficits, policy experts at the National Center for Public Policy Research are criticizing the Obama Administration for awarding a half million dollar grant from the economic stimulus package to Penn State Professor Michael Mann, a key figure in the Climategate controversy.

“It’s outrageous that economic stimulus money is being used to support research conducted by Michael Mann at the very time he’s under investigation by Penn State and is one of the key figures in the international Climategate scandal.  Penn State should immediately return these funds to the U.S. Treasury,” said Tom Borelli, Ph.D., director of the National Center’s Free Enterprise Project.

At the heart of this is the relationship between the state and science.  While no one would suggest that the government should be anti-science, this incident raises more suspicion about the cozy relationship between the two.  Our government seems bent on acquiring more and more power over the citizenry and the economy.  One of the many vehicles for this is the Cap and Trade Legislation.  This legislation has, as it’s rationale, the key point that man made carbon emissions are causing the planet to warm at an alarming rate.  With all the funding (globally) going to this research, and the government(s) wanting AGW to be true, is it any surprise that the research is being faked?  That scientists have been discovered attempting to “fudge” their data?  That they have been caught conspiring to silence their critics, and prevent competing research from being published?  That they deleted raw data?  That they were communicating regarding deleting emails and other incriminating information.  That they have gone to the extent of re-writing history?  So, they get published, they get funded, they get professional prestige and the government gets control over the means of production.

That must be really convenient.

Matt

MattI believe that future generations should have the same opportunities that myself, and those that came before me, had. My parents taught me that I could do anything I wanted to do. I don’t want to have to tell my daughter, “You can do whatever the government tells you to do.” We are at a crossroads in this country; are we going to be free, or are we going to be slaves to the nanny state. I choose freedom.

Matt, this sounds like the ENRON scam. Fudge the numbers, shred the documents, and silence all the whistle blowers. Oh ok I get it now.

Except ENRON was a private company, and therefore evil. The government? Well, they do what’s best for us “rabble,” because after all, they know what’s best.

So, we have a scientist who is a believer in the global warming theory. Said theory is also the favorite topic of said administration. Said scientist gets money from said administration to make sure the results of experiments reflect said theory. Sounds like they have it all figured out to me. Why should we even question them? (Sarcasm fully intended.) ;)

You must NEVER question the Goracle! The “science” is “settled.” As is the government funding and control apparatus.

  • Ron Russell January 16, 2010 at 7:45 pm

I guess the founders never envisioned a need for separation of science and state. Those scientist who tow the mark are rewarded and those who do not are condemned and left to fin for themselves with no patrons in high places. Sadly it may have come to this!

Well Ron, at least two of the founders, Jefferson and Franklin were either inventors or scientists. I don’t know that they ever foresaw the government as a patron of custom delivered science.

Instead of the government supporting the research it is in fact encouraging the data to be skewed so that it supports an already approved theory of propaganda. This is not science. This is environmentalist propaganda that isn’t based on fact or data.

Agreed Teresa. It’s all about reaching the predetermined political objective.
