CNN recently published (to my surprise) the results of a poll that indicates that a majority of Americans view the government as an imminent threat to their freedoms.

Fifty-six percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday say they think the federal government’s become so large and powerful that it poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens. Forty-four percent of those polled disagree.

Now, I know what the talking heads will say; “It’s all of those ignorant, redneck, racist, fascist, gun-owning, bible believing, flat Earther, and undereducated teabaggers!”  Well, the breakdown of the numbers is even more revealing.

The survey indicates a partisan divide on the question: only 37 percent of Democrats, 63 percent of Independents and nearly 7 in 10 Republicans say the federal government poses a threat to the rights of Americans.

According to CNN poll numbers released Sunday, Americans overwhelmingly think that the U.S. government is broken – though the public overwhelmingly holds out hope that what’s broken can be fixed. (Emphasis mine)

This is where the numbers kill the Democrats.  It’s a no-brainer that Conservatives and Republicans would view the government as a threat.  However, that 63% that I emphasized is the coup de grace for the Democrats.  If you remember, polling over the summer indicated that about 20% of the population is liberal, over 40% is Conservative, and the rest being  independent.  The independents showed up for the Democrats big time in 2006 & 2008.  They are apparently having “buyers remorse.”

While the POTUS might think that he only needs to “educate” us more, we’ve gotten the message already.  Bill Maher might thing that we’re “stupid,” but it seems that we’ve figured out the score.  The left can condescend as much as they like, but their days are numbered, and so are their plans.

Matt

MattI believe that future generations should have the same opportunities that myself, and those that came before me, had. My parents taught me that I could do anything I wanted to do. I don’t want to have to tell my daughter, “You can do whatever the government tells you to do.” We are at a crossroads in this country; are we going to be free, or are we going to be slaves to the nanny state. I choose freedom.

Right now, the federal government is a huge threat to our freedoms, even when the Republicans are in power. Us, the people, need to demand real changes within the Republican party, or else establish a third party, which I believe would be bad for America. Nothing short of reducing the size and spending of the federal government has to be demanded. A return to a strict adherence to the Constitution is needed. I’m not sure how to accomplish it, but Keynesian economics needs to be banned from Washington, D.C. and we need to return to “free market” economics. End the FED.

      “End the FED.”

      Amen!

Well said Jackie. I’ve often said that Democrats vs. GOP has been mostly socialist vs. socialist “lite.” I think we need to give the GOP a nudge, or failing that, a kick in the pants to get them were they need to be.

They WON’T be showing up for them in 2010 or 2012.

Agree. There is a TON of buyer’s remorse out there. With the general feeling of true hope and change (on the part of the electorate), Obama really could have been a truly great President. However the only problem with that is that he is a rigid ideologue and not interested in his ‘legacy’ like Clinton was. So instead of representing the American people, he is charting course for socialistic waters and cares not what the people think.

Either that, or he is as dumb as Biden.

The Fed is a major threat to our liberties and freedoms. This is why a fresh look at the Constitution is so important. It really is one of the few things that can stop them in their tracks if enforced. Great post Matt!

      Matt March 1, 2010 at 11:52 pm

Thanks John, the numbers speak for themselves. I agree. We have to return to Constitutional rule.

  • Infidel de Manahatta March 1, 2010 at 8:43 pm

I find it’s standard practice for Bill Maher and the rest of the liberals to call people who disagree with them stupid. It saves these lazy people from actually having to engage in the issues and debate the reason for their beliefs.

Instead they’ll just attack because their church, the Church of the White Liberal, is under attack.

      Matt March 1, 2010 at 11:55 pm

Agreed. It’s Alinsky and the Church of the State. That’s for sure.

  • LD Jackson March 1, 2010 at 8:46 pm

We have some American citizens that think they should be able to look to the federal government for anything they need. A different group of American citizens, of which I am a member, is of the opinion that we should be able to do for ourselves. Maybe we are just a bunch of independent spirits around here, but I think we can be depended on a lot more than can the federal government.

    • Matt
      Matt March 1, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Well said LD. The government assistance comes at too steep a price. That, and it often fails in an epic manner.

Conservatives have always been afraid of government and the bigger the more dangerous in their eyes. But its only recently that many in the so-called middle have taken this position, this should be troubling for those on the left the advocates of big government.

The thing that is encouraging, and scary, is that the independents do cycle. They showed up for Obama, and now they seem to going to our side. I have a hard time personally grasping that.

  • theLibertyPen March 1, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Stop clutching to your guns Matt, you’re embarrassing yourself. Besides, Pelosi was into the Tea Party movement, didn’t you hear?

The threat that this big government poses against our freedom and liverty is increasing every day. We are educated. Unfortunately, Obama doesn’t like that our education goes against his big plans. Obama wants to reeducate us his way. Free thought rules!

    • Matt
      Matt March 2, 2010 at 12:07 am

That free thought, and it’s expression, is what will undo the left. And that is why they will one day target it.

  • Mr Pink Eyes March 1, 2010 at 9:56 pm

It is with the independents that Barack Obama has his biggest problem. With 63% of them believing that the government is a threat to their liberties this is more proof that the growing opposition to Obama is more than just us “angry right wingers who will oppose anything the president proposes.” The media can portray opponents of Barack Obama as radical right wingers, but the poll numbers show us that Obama has more problems with the independents than he does with Republicans.

    • Matt
      Matt March 2, 2010 at 12:08 am

Very true. It also goes against the whole, “It’s an anti-incumbent” sentiment.

I was surprised that a CNN poll had these results. Would have expected this from FOX, but…

It does suggest that even folks who don’t consider themselves conservative aren’t happy.

It bodes well for November, at least for us. The Dems have to be reading this, and shaking in their skirts!
