Today I mourn for the United States of America and the people who USED to be free. Make no mistake – with every piece of legislation that gives the federal government more control over our economy and our lives, we give up yet another piece of our freedom. We indeed are NOT a free republic as we were 110 years ago. Merriam-Webster says this of socialism, “any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.
Do you know why so many people are against the free market and capitalism? It is because the free market has NOT existed in the United States since before 1913. They have no idea what the free market is or looks like or how it works. What these people are against is a socialist economy where the government interferes with every aspect of the free market from the production of money (the Federal Reserve, insurance, stock market) to the prodution of goods like automobiles and healthcare. They don’t realize that they are against socialism because they falsely believe that we have been and still are operating under a free market economy.
There was a man named Norman Mattoon Thomas who ran for President in the 1920s and 1930s. He ran on the Socialist Party of America ticket. Here is what he reportedly said back then:
Wake up citizens of the United States!!! If you care about living in a free Republic where your voice counts, you need to get involved – let your voices be heard – and last BUT not least – PRAY!

Great quote by Thomas. Taming the capitalist system slightly is fine by me however too much has been done of late, particularly Obamakare. Just wait until the government gets more involved in our lives to pay for it!
If the free market was “free” from government interference, it would work properly without need for “taming”. The people would tame it by their choice of who to buy from. What the government is responsible for is to ensure there is healthy competition. Because without healthy competition, yes, companies would not necessarily do what’s right because the people would have no choice but to buy from them. With every government entanglement comes more taxes and less money for the people to spend to keep our economy viberant.
To learn more how the free market economy is supposed to work, read a lot of books and articles at http://www.mises.org. They have a lot of books on-line.
Great post Jackie.
@ Harrison, I think many would agree with your point. But the problem with government is when you give them some power, they will eventually take more and more. It’s kinda like telling a crack addict that they can only smoke “just a little bit.”
Excellent post Jackie. You’re right when you stated that we haven’t had free market system in this country for awhile. Most people have always assumed we were a free market, when in reality it has been a mixed economic system. We can turn this around; the key is educatiion. We must keep getting this word out while we still have a free voice. We need to wake the people up from their sleep and remind them that they are Americans and do not need to settle for government cheese.
Sadly you have so clearly stated what so many of us would prefer not to hear. The truth is peculiar that way. We oft would prefer a lie as opposed to hearing the truth. That weakness in the people of America, myself included, has gotten us to where we are. Only the Truth can set us free.

I saw this on your site and commented there. Great article, Jackie.
Reagan used this quote in a 1961 speech he gave about socialized medicine. Very good quote and I have noticed that some left leaning sites are now saying the quote is unattributable. Go figure.
