Since the passage of the Health Care Reform bill, my approach to political discussions has changed in a fundamental way: I no longer allow lies to prevail. My style though, like so many other styles, is unique. First of all, I’m not an overly nice guy, I mean “fake” nice smiling at everything people say. In other words, I’m not a politician. What I do emphasize is two things: respect and factual accuracy. These two basic approaches are devastating to the leftists who tend to base their arguments on gross distortions of the truth and emotional appeals. Here are some examples of how this has worked in practice:

- Discussing education with a teacher, one of her arguments for why education in this country is not doing as well as it should was that this “The US is committed to education for all children of all people to the limit of their capacity. This idea is unique, no other country has had either the vision or the resources to undertake this task.” Note: this is a teacher in charge of teaching our children. As many people know, most if not all industrialized countries in the world have a system of universal education at least from K to 12 with the same “vision,” in fact, all of the countries that rank ahead of ours have such a system. Without facts, this discussion would have been based on a false premise and I would have been at a disadvantage. This underscores the importance of independently researching topics that matter to us as a society. It also shows that our teachers need to be better educated before they infect our children with such drivel.

- Recently, I posted a comment on an article written by a conservative and received an email from a liberal who had a problem with what I wrote. He wrote: “I do not go the a website (i.e Huffington post) to read posts that I agree with….I do not need affirmation of my liberals beliefs…..unlike u dittoheads and Beck worshippers who only seek affirmation of your racist and narrow minded views.” We see here clearly that the liberal uses his oft-repeated accusations of racism and stupidity/ignorance laced with other assumptions. My reply was lengthy and so I won’t post it here, but to paraphrase I explained to him my multiracial background, the fact that I read articles from different perspectives, and I suggested that he practice more of that liberal “tolerance” that they preach before he starts accusing people of things he knows nothing of. At the bottom of my email I wrote “God bless you.” This final part was the most important for various reasons, first of all he seemed very very angry and possibly needed to be reminded that though we may disagree, we don’t have to be nasty. Second, the far Left gets even more incensed when conservatives wish them well or invoke God and I wondered if he was that type. If someone is an ideological enemy, it does not mean that they are our mortal enemy (though often the converse is true) therefore we must remember to retain civility in discussions since this is far more powerful that foaming at the mouth (as they tend to do). Respect your opponent and never underestimate him.

- Discussing an article by Newt Gingrich with a liberal, instead of debating the content of the article he went on attacking Gingrich personally, calling out bullet point after bullet point of why he is a terrible person. Here’s one of his gems:

Considering that he cheated on his wife while she was dying of cancer at the exact same time he was trying to impeach Bill Clinton, I’m betting it’s that he’s a lying sack of shit.

For those paying attention, this accusation is false (his marital problems took place more than a decade earlier) but that won’t stop this guy. Another interesting part is that he, in an episode of projection, called Gingrich’s article “intellectually dishonest.” My reply was “you attack the man not the message, THAT is intellectually dishonest… Shame on you for debating things outside this article.” Only after this, did the liberal realize that he was getting out of hand and promised to “tone it down.” Fortunately, we were eventually able to discuss the actual content only to have him misrepresent data and force me to, again, correct him. This is what many on the Left do, especially the more extreme ones, they choose to sidestep the argument completely in favor of pointing out something distasteful yet unrelated. Whenever you see someone opt for attacking a person or thing related to the topic instead of discussing policy head-on, it shows that either they cannot intelligently discuss policy or have opinions that are based on whether they personally like someone or something, as opposed to analyzing the benefits and risks of the policy in question. Having a clear head, pointing out when they are being cruel or dishonest, and having facts on hand is critical to refuting the near-constant barrage of disinformation that liberals spew during debates.

These are just some of my more recent encounters with the Left, all of them show the shallowness of their arguments and highlight the importance of both respect and factual accuracy when engaging them. On the national scene, this becomes more pressing… but I say that the conservative revolution must be from the bottom-up and in the microcosm that is our everyday lives we must make sure that we blast away the silly leftist ideas every chance we get, but do it with respect so that the liberal can back away with dignity. Who knows, we might even convince a few of them in the process.

MattI believe that future generations should have the same opportunities that myself, and those that came before me, had. My parents taught me that I could do anything I wanted to do. I don’t want to have to tell my daughter, “You can do whatever the government tells you to do.” We are at a crossroads in this country; are we going to be free, or are we going to be slaves to the nanny state. I choose freedom.

I feel really bad for the author of this. He’s so full of false bravado, pseudo intellectualism, and yes barely disguised fear and hatred – that he’s blind to the sad state of his own beliefs.

He just needs to take a breath and calm down. Just calm down sir.

Relax, and acknowledge the fact that though you might feel forced to demonize thoughtful and intelligent people with your labels, and misinformation, you only do so through your own fear of losing control.

Once you realize that you cant enforce your worldview and your definition of morality onto everyone else, then you will find peace.

Until then, please calm down sir.

May your god be with you and your family.

    Sincerely.

I usually don’t let these comments through, they’re lib trolls. This one, however, actually proves AG’s point. They have nothing constructive to say, they just launch a personal attack.

      So, thanks.

I actually like his/her “turning the tables” on me… except that he wrote “god” instead of “God.” “A” for effort!

Oh no! You’re ego’s all flat and junk. Did I do that? Here. Let’s dialogue over latte, preferably purchased by the government. Shall we meet at your government check line or mine? Oh, shoot. I got no government check. Cause I’m a Conservative. Sooooo … Kay! Bye!

AG, another great post sir. I think we’re getting studying the ways of the left down to a science here at the CH 2.0.

Almost forgot. Clinton was impeached for perjury. The claim that it was about cheating was how the left framed the argument. If memory serves, he plead guilty to that in Arkansas, paid a fine, and lost his law license.

I’ve been in the writing profession to some extent since 1996. Except for the time when I met Matt here, who hung around a group of mostly writers and artists who happened to amazingly have more than one token conservative or libertarian among them (we’re talking maybe 3), I have always been the only one who believes in the “right” way of doing things. I have, for years, argued facts to the deaf, dumb, and blind. I am no longer “friends” with many of the people I have worked with over the years, simply because I’m a “right-wing extremist” (ie, a strict Constitutionalist) and they are so tolerant they’ve called me racist, homophobic, and an anachronism.

So, my style of dealing with libtards has also developed over the years. Now, I show them the same benevolent “tolerance” they’ve given me for so many years. Now, I just eat them; it’s bad for the digestive system but good for the planet.

      AG April 21, 2010 at 12:15 pm

Lol… there are indeed many styles to confronting them, but what gets me is when they completely avoid arguing just so they can tear you or others down. That’s cowardice. I always try to bring it back to the issues.

I’m sorry that you had to deal with these types of people and just hope you keep on eating them up. Bon apetit!

  • Jim April 20, 2010 at 10:06 am

I take a slightly different approach. I don’t eat all of them, just their souls

  • Jackie Durkee April 20, 2010 at 1:44 pm

It is amazing how progressives really have nothing substantive to say, except to attack you in any way they can. Occassionally, at 10 central, I’ll turn the channel over to MSNBC to watch Rachel Maddow. I can usually hang on for about 1 minute until I’m totally disgusted and switch to somthing else. I can handle CNN much more than MSNBC.

Just a word about education. Another thing progressives don’t look at or talk about are the millions of students (mostly boys) who drop out of school every year. The reason: they are kinesthetic learners and our entire school system refuses to change the way they have been teaching for centuries in order to accomodate these kids. They need to move, touch, feel, experience. Sitting in a classroom for an hour taking notes or listening to a teacher drone on and on is beyond their capability. These boys could be our mathematicians, scientists and inventors of the future.

Sorry, couldn’t help myself. Anything someone mentions our school system, a time-bomb goes off inside me.

I like to watch Rachel Maddow to see what sort of gibberish the left is eagerly swallowing… I recently saw a video of her saying that the Constitution doesn’t have a preamble, but I guess since she and most of her die-hard supporters don’t read the Constitution she wouldn’t know that it actually does. Short video:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uy23DBJ4QKk

On the kinesthetic learners bit. While there are many students out there like that, they must learn to sit down, take notes, and operate in that type of environment. I agree that the school system should do something to facilitate that type of learning, while making sure they can handle the traditional type as well. This is a good argument for encouraging multiple school models in society, instead of reinforcing a government education monopoly. Solutions in the realm of education will never come as long as teachers’ unions have their way…

Great post. You have way more patience than I do, AG. I’m like Snarky Basterd, I just ignore them and move on. I will say “God Bless” most of them hate that.

      AG April 21, 2010 at 12:28 pm

I think we must draw a line in the sand and confront them. Too long has the majority been silent. For too long have conservative academics, professors, etc. been bullied into hiding their opinions. To allow them to lie, smear, and distort only keeps their memes alive. Also, many liberals out there, the regular folks who just hear the soundbites and follow the party, are woefully misinformed on issues. It is good to “talk some sense into them” and clear up many of the lies they hear. I think developing a thick skin can go a long way. I encourage you to try it, you may have more patience than you think!

  • Karen Howes April 20, 2010 at 7:50 pm

Excellent post, AG. I’ve been saying something similar lately– namely, that we have to stop accepting the (false) premises of leftist ideology.

As an example, there was a story about a kindergarten boy who was suspended over making a gun shape of his hand and pointing it at another student. The mother complained that the punishment was too severe, and that he should simply have been kept in at recess or something. She made sure to add that he doesn’t have toy guns at home. A lot of people who commented on the article were also saying that the kid was punished too harshly, and that it was stupid.

The point they all missed was that this kid shouldn’t have been punished in the first place. They were implicitly agreeing with the leftist idea that guns are evil.

We need to stop accepting their false foundational claims. We need to use logic and be rational and calm. There’s nothing that leftists hate more.

      AG April 21, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Absolutely right. Nice anecdote, I hadn’t heard it. They also hate the respect part, they are conditioned to think that everyone argues in the same way, as enraged and condescending as they are.

  • John Carey April 20, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Another great post AG. I have a very hard time with a progressive friend that claims to be something else. Yes that’s right I said he was a friend even though he is a progressive. No matter what the issue, we tend to be on opposite sides. I have actually hung up on him because he brings so much emotional garbage into the debate. I think you have given great advice and I will try to use it in the future.

    • Matt
      AG April 21, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Thanks. On that note, I have a friend who is completely against the second amendment and who, over the years, has argued with me frequently over the issue. I think that after much debate with others, discussing the issue with me was something actually pleasant and we were able to reach a point where, though we disagreed, she understood why we disagreed. This was an excellent leap forward, from the irrationality that used to pepper our discussions to a point of disagreement that was measured. In other words, despite the fact that she’s maybe a hopeless case, I was able to move her beyond simply hating people that had a different opinion. We can now have an intelligent conversation on the matter. We were unable to finish the talk and I hope I can finish my case next time we meet.

One of the things that inspired this post was my conversation with her, where I realized that in debating that issue, she wasn’t debating policy, she was debating soundbites and empty phrases with soundbites and empty phrases. You know, like “an armed society is a free society” and “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” These things are good in context, just to get an idea across. They are not arguments. The Left has its share as well. I think if you keep being respectful and reasonable, not resorting to bashing them over the head with aforementioned-type refrains, then they will actually listen… Or maybe I’m just a dirty hippie idealist who thinks he can change the world…

Thanks for the great comments, guys. Sorry I wasn’t able to respond much sooner, too much work lately. Funny that we got a troll on a post that I described my run-in with a troll (the second person that I talk about in the post actually went on to email everyone on the list of “commenters” who sounded conservative and it was concluded that he was, in fact, just a troll). Anyways, he makes my point, as Matt said.
