Last year, I covered that there is a “Demographic of Doom” for the Democratic Party. Basically, the people politically identified as ‘Conservatives” vastly outnumbered those identified as “liberal,” and equaled those identified as “moderate or independent.” This is what I had to say back then.
Recent polls have shown that America is beginning to move to the right, with 40% claiming to be Conservative, 21% liberal, and 38% “moderate.”
With nearly a 2-1 margin, Conservatives might see this as a cause for celebration. This has happened before- people do turn more conservative when there are difficult economic times. It might also be because the POTUS has been caught in many of his lies, and his polices are being exposed, stalled, and (hopefully) defeated.
The research I noted indicates that neither ideology has a sufficient voting bloc to win an election outright, the liberals even more so. Obviously, this explains why the POTUS appeared more moderate in his rhetoric during the campaign, and why he distanced himself from his associations with ACORN, Jeremiah Wright, and Bill Ayers. They knew what to say, and when to say it, to put the moderates at ease. Also consider that the MSM selectively covers the left in a way that ignores their failure and promotes or invents the successes, and consequently, there was a mass deception. Combine all of that with the fact that the left and the MSM browbeat Bush for eight years (And Bush did an abysmal job in explaining his positions), inducing ‘Bush fatigue.” In the end, as the saying goes, the “center did not hold.”
The implications of this are clear. The Democrats cannot win elections without taking the middle. They were able to do that in 2006, and 2008. However, 2010 looks to be pretty bad for the Democrats. Additionally, as I noted last July, the POTUS tried to appear moderate to set the middle at ease when he ran for office. After the last 15 months of actually governing (or not), the people have gotten a taste of Obama’s policies, and it has proven to be a most sour flavor. Needless to say, he’ll not be able to replicate that strategy.
Gallup has duplicated their polling. And the results seem a bit worse for the Democrats.
PRINCETON, NJ — Conservatives have maintained their leading position among U.S. ideological groups in the first half of 2010. Gallup finds 42% of Americans describing themselves as either very conservative or conservative. This is up slightly from the 40% seen for all of 2009 and contrasts with the 20% calling themselves liberal or very liberal.
The 2010 results are based on eight Gallup and USA Today/Gallup surveys conducted from January through June, encompassing interviews with more than 8,000 U.S. adults. The 42% identifying as conservative represents a continuation of the slight but statistically significant edge conservatives achieved over moderates in 2009. Should that figure hold for all of 2010, it would represent the highest annual percentage identifying as conservative in Gallup’s history of measuring ideology with this wording, dating to 1992.
Here’s a telling trend.
Independents today are slightly more likely to say they are moderate than conservative, with fewer than 20% identifying as liberal. While this is similar to 2009, it represents an increase in conservatism among this group since 2008. (emphasis mine)
So, this is a potentially disastrous trend for Democrats, and especially the “progressive” wing. They need moderates and independents to vote for them. Otherwise, they are a fringe party. However, the independents and moderates have been increasingly alienated by the Democrat’s schemes, and are moving to the right. Essentially, both poles need the middle to win, but the left needs far more of that segment than the right to pull off electoral victories. Also, we must consider that not all members of any segment will vote, but at this point in time, enthusiasm goes to the Conservatives, so the GOP should expect greater turnout and gains in November.
I looked forward for this polling data, as Gallup does it yearly. I was interested in seeing if the trends had changed. However, it has some particular importance, given the recent immigration debate. Over the last week or so, I’ve been stressing to other bloggers that ” Comprehensive Immigration Reform” (read: amnesty) is solely targeted at leveling the ideological/demographic imbalance. If the “progressives” can grant amnesty to millions of illegals, and make them dependent on government programming, they can do much to “correct” this imbalance. It’s not that they care for the illegals any more than any of their other client groups. They keep them down just enough to keep them on the government plantation (as well as letting them think that they are doing them a favor). That way, they know they’ll have their votes every election day.

This is good news. The president– as you said– can no longer pretend to be something he is not, he is exposed, and people are going to vote in the mind-term on the president’s agenda. This will be a referendum on his presidency, but we can expect the media to claim otherwise.
You mentioned the one fear I have, amnesty. If illegals ever get the right to vote we may never be able to take back our government, it won’t be our’s anymore.
I’m afraid that getting the illegals in and voting is a major goal. They need the bodies, and the votes that go with them.
Those that think the Dems will not push illegal immigration before the election are fooling themselves. They can not complete their plan without those votes.
They may no get the votes for November, but they will want them for 2012.
Leftists always lie about being moderates and also having your best interests at heart, they have to lie, because if people knew what they’re really like, they’d be revolted.
It’s great to hear that the number of Conservatives is on the rise, however i’ll also mention that even soft-liberals once exposed to the consequences of leftist rule are turned off when they get round to pulling their heads out of their asses and having a good look.
Rock on Conservatives, choke on that leftists.
They are choking on it, MK. That’s why the want the illegals.
The trend looks great Matt, but I also agree that they are going to do whatever it takes to grant amnesty. Perhaps there should be a counter message from the right, telling these groups that the only reason the left wants to grant amnesty is to get their vote and nothing more. Tell these groups that they will become slaves of a different master by becoming dependent on a system that cannot possibly support them They need to know that this eliminates the entire reason why they sought out America and that this plan has very little to do with improving the quality of their lives. We want these folk to understand that the right is not anti-immigration, we are pro legal immigration and that we desire for every immigrant to have the same opportunity as immigrants have always had in America. We want them to have the same chance at success as our grandparents did when they arrived in America.
I think if the right can start countering the left’s message with these simple truths, perhaps they would not be so eager to push for a blanket amnesty. That just my thought for what it is worth.
That’s a great idea John. I think we need just
Great post! Thanks!
You’re right on with this statement, “It’s not that they care for the illegals any more than any of their other client groups. They keep them down just enough to keep them on the government plantation (as well as letting them think that they are doing them a favor). That way, they know they’ll have their votes every election day.”
Thomas Sowell had a great article (Is US Now on Slippery Slope to Tyranny) about “useful idiots” that I found very informative. http://www.investors.com/NewsAndAnalysis/Article/537967/201006211813/Is-US-Now-On-Slippery-Slope-To-Tyranny-.aspx
Can’t stand coercion – on any level!
Thanks again!
Thanks Concerned!
Liberals everywhere are now slitting their wrists. Hey, one can hope.
Eh, they’re sitting around trying to figure out how to slit ours. If they only would give up that easily.

I’m not surprised, Matt. Most people I encounter in real life are at least moderately conservative. Including students. In fact, one of my students last year was an avid fan of Glenn Beck.
I must live in a strange area. Most of the people that I deal with seem at least somewhat Conservative, but they faithfully line up to to vote Democrat every election day. Thanks for your comment, as it does seem encouraging.
Of particular notice in your post is the “immigration” portion. It’s spot-on. This week we heard that 8 Republican Senators sent a letter to Obama saying if you are thinking of legalizing illegals through an executive order – stop it now. It seemed far too far out to be believable, but I’m sure the Senators didn’t write the letter during lunch to simply while away the time.
This morning, I heard a discussion implying that the Executive Order may be used for those holding visas right now. Obviously, that will be expanded to those with expired visas, and on and on. Democrats are desperate for the vote of Hispanics who are not citizens – and they need them legal and registered before election officials close their books for November.
If we think some kind of “immigration reform” can’t happen before then, we to rethink it.
This is a fine article Matt.
Thank you very much for the kind words, Maggie. I don’t know if they hope to make an impact on November, but they sure plan on doing it in 2012. I hear they’re going to try cap and trade after the election. They might just do amnesty then as well. Cap and trade can be repealed, amnesty, once granted, cannot.
I’ve noticed over my many years that they things tend to move a little this way or that, but generally stay about the same. Often those politicians on the left move toward the center in such times and many in the general population buy the lies they spew. If it was just about the number of conservatives vs. number of liberals we would always win hands down, but so many other factors come into play. And then theres the MSM which will always sway many votes to the left. Far too many variables here to even attempt to make predictions. We are a right of centre nation and will remain that in the foreseeable future, will conservatives carry the day however, that remains to be seen!
When I wrote about last year’s results, I said the we have a “mission.” That is to get our message out to as many people as possible. I see that this has not changed. We must have been successful, as the Dems in Congress have passed the DISCLOSE act, and are keen on the FCC regulating the Internet.
Getting the message out – that’s what it’s all about and one reason I believe we cannot allow the federal overreach into education.
Time to Stand Up to National Standards – from the Heritage Foundation blog The Foundry
Instead of moving toward a system of rigid national standards, which would represent an unprecedented federal overreach into education, states should empower parents with information about school performance and increase transparency about academic achievement. And ultimately, parents should be able to use that information to choose a school that meets their child’s needs.
We know what works in education, and it begins and ends with parents–not the federal government.
