I was inspired to write this post by an interview I read over at Trestin Meacham’s blog.  He was interviewing a fellow blogger Hyphenated-American and I was moved by his words.

The following is an excerpt from that interview.

TM: Why should Americans be concerned about socialism?

H-A: In the final analysis, socialism is modern day slavery. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, democracy, freedom of religion, freedom of association cannot exist in the absence of free market economy. If a man cannot keep the fruits of his labor, if the government has full control over his economic activity – that man is nothing but a slave. Every increase of government’s economic power comes at the expense of individual liberty. Every time government claims its right to regulate this or that commerce – the less freedom of choice is left to the individual.

You can read the entire interview here.

I know most of you already understand that socialism is a form of modern day slavery but there is a large segment of the population that simply doesn’t see it that way for one reason or another.  This includes the current administration running the show.  Every bill they have passed or proposed is designed to redistribute wealth.  From the stimulus bill, Obamacare, and the recently passed financial reform bill to the proposed cap and trade and immigration reform bills, they have all been crafted to redistribute wealth on a scale that infringes on the liberties and freedoms of the individual like never before.

Two years ago candidate Obama made an off-the-cuff comment about spreading the wealth around to a plumber that questioned why the fruits of his labor should be redistributed.  Obama’s answer was that he didn’t want to punish the plumber’s success; he just wanted to give the folks behind him the same opportunity.  Well when you confiscate wealth from an individual and redistribute to another, not only are you punishing their success, but you’re enslaving them because they now work for another segment of society for free.  Essentially their labor becomes the property of another.

Slavery is defined as: 1. Submission to a dominating influence. 2. The state of a person who is a chattel of another b : the practice of slaveholding

Now the one key thing we need to understand is that the redistribution of wealth is a tenet of socialism.  I would even say it’s a cornerstone of the philosophy.  So why would so many Americans even consider this self-imposed form of slavery?  I mean look at our progressive tax system; if you make more wealth, then expect to be punished with higher taxes and the fruits of your labors to be redistributed to the have-nots.  This has a crippling effect not only on the free market system but on the lower class that desires to break free from their current class.  When you’re capping success in a society, you’re building a wall to protect those that have already achieved success and keep out those that wish to achieve it.

Below is a pretty good video that compares socialism to modern slavery.  It’s about 9 minutes long but worth the look.

So the next time you hear someone espousing about all the good that socialism offers, ask them why they desire to enslave the working class and see what answer they give you.  Maybe they’ll tell you that they don’t want to punish your success, they just want to make sure that the have-nots have the same opportunity at success.  What’s ironic is that socialism does just the opposite by giving the have-nots the scraps from the table and building a wall to keep them from achieving success.  It’s a nice ideology if you’re an elitist.
Liberty forever, freedom for all!

MattI believe that future generations should have the same opportunities that myself, and those that came before me, had. My parents taught me that I could do anything I wanted to do. I don’t want to have to tell my daughter, “You can do whatever the government tells you to do.” We are at a crossroads in this country; are we going to be free, or are we going to be slaves to the nanny state. I choose freedom.

    Nice work, John.

Bill Buckley had an interesting nugget: If you’re taxed at 99% of your income, you’re a slave. Well, what happens when it’s 50% of your income?

The modern Left either doesn’t understand this…or understands it all too well.

    • John Carey July 23, 2010 at 9:36 pm

Thanks KS. The answer is , you’re still a slave at 50 percent….

  • Jackie Durkee July 23, 2010 at 9:47 am

It not only makes slaves of the people the wealth is being taken away from, it makes slaves of the people relying on the state for unemployment wages, what they eat, their Medicare, Medicaid, etc. When some of those “have-nots” wake up and want to get off the entitlements, they find it very difficult to do so, because if they try to get ahead and make more money eventually they lose their entitlements, but that comes WAY before they can afford to replace the entitlements they were getting with their own money. It is a Catch 22 for them.

The U.S. is going to pot real fast and unless some strong ethical person takes charge soon, I don’t see it going into reverse.

    • John Carey July 23, 2010 at 9:44 pm

Thanks for the comments Jackie. You are so right when you say that it’s a two way street in terms of making people slaves of the system. I have always said that in America we should not have to settle for crumbs because as longs as the free markets system stays intact, there is absolutely no reason to settle for crumbs because success is only an idea away. Obama is rapidly closing that door and that scares me a bit.

I can already feel the shackles being hammered on. There is no other land of freedom on earth and I fear we are watching as this sinks beneath the socialist tide.

I love this post. I reminds me of one of my favorite quotes…

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!”

    • John Carey July 23, 2010 at 10:55 pm

Thanks Matt. Who was the quote by?

  • Teresa July 23, 2010 at 9:41 pm

Wonderful Post, John! The Left can keep the change and/or chains. Freedom is a right guaranteed by the constitution and it is not optional or alienable, like liberals believe it is.

    • John Carey July 23, 2010 at 10:57 pm

Thanks Teresa. The progressives see the Constitution as a living and breathing document that can change like the wind. We must remind them it is not!

  • Steve Dennis July 23, 2010 at 9:50 pm

Great post John, slavery comes inmany forms and socialism is the slavery of working people to benefit the non-workers.

    • John Carey July 23, 2010 at 10:59 pm

Thanks Steve. You are indeed right about the enslavement of the working people. Their property becomes the property of another.

  • Karen Howes July 23, 2010 at 10:29 pm

John, I don’t know why people don’t see this. How does anyone who understands history think that it can work, when the past 100 years show that the only result is misery, mediocrity, poverty, and mass murder?

Socialism crushes the human spirit and every occasion for generosity and charity.

    • John Carey July 23, 2010 at 11:03 pm

Karen people don’t know because they are ignorant. They become useful idiots for those that do know the truth about socialism and the slavery it imposes on the people.

  • John Carey July 23, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Ken thanks for the comments. I remain cautiously optimistic. I believe we could possibly be on the cusp of a political revolution in our Republic. I sense the Democrats/Socialist party is coming undone. The people are rejecting these policies and are learning about the founders and our Constitution. It is always darkest before the dawn.

  • Maggie M. Thornton July 23, 2010 at 11:57 pm

That off-the-cuff comment about redistributing the wealth was a slip only in that he usually wouldn’t reveal his long-held idea. He said it and we elected him anyway. Who else would say that?

I’ve probably said this here before, but if we can’t bring about significant change in November, I don’t know what conservatives will do. If we can’t do it then, can we do it in 2012? It would seem we could take the White House, but again, what if we don’t?

I am feeling so dark tonight. Sorry!

    • John Carey July 24, 2010 at 12:13 am

Maggie it’s ok to be a bit fearful about the future, it keeps us focused and sharp. Our steadfast determination to bring this nightmare to an end will drive us to vote out this people. Keep the faith!

  • Harrison July 24, 2010 at 1:39 pm

If you are a slacker enjoying 3 months of vacation, unusually high pay, and a pension you will not consider yourself to be a slave. The slower the process of socializing a country is, the more likely most members of its population will be unaware or raise any protest.

The story Harrison Bergeron comes to mind.

    • John Carey July 24, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Well said Harrison. It’s kind of a blessing in disguise that Obama attempted to shift us so far to the left that the a large number of people woke up.

Great article! I’ve been fighting recently with the National Popular Vote people. As Jefferson said, “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine”. We have (or will) become slaves in more ways than one.

I just pray more American’s wake up and smell the redistribution. But that in itself is part of the problem, we now have fewer people paying taxes than we have on the dole. Redistribution sounds great to them.

    • John Carey July 25, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Thanks for the comments Kristin. We need to ratchet up our game as they increase the pressure on our Republic. We have the majority of the people on our page.
