Throughout the 20th century, car companies came and went. Whether due to mismanagement, or changing market conditions, many companies went out of business. Others just stopped making cars, and went into other directions. Those different directions are sometimes surprising. Enjoy the links, and I’ll throw in some car company information.

REO: Founded by Ransom E. Olds (yeah, he’d already founded Oldsmobile) REO continued making cars until the 30′s, when the Great Depression caused them to focus on trucks.

Yes, that is a REO Speedwagon!
In the mid 50′s, REO sold off their truck business. Instead of closing up shop for good, they went into a variety of different ventures, until they decided to go into the steel business, as they are now, as NUCOR.

Studebaker: Studebaker had the longest time in the transportation business of just about anyone. The Studebaker brothers first came to prominence in the Civil war for making wagons for the military. Then, they made many of the “Conestoga” wagons used in Western migration. Once the 20th century hit, they got into the car business. They thrived until the mid 50′s, when mismanagement, a terrible union, quality problems, and a price war between GM and Ford crippled them. They managed to survive until 1966, at least as a car maker.

As their car business struggled, their management diversified, buying other businesses, so they could survive long term. Survive they did, as part of Studebaker-Worthington, a company that leases industrial equipment.

Graham-Paige: You probably haven’t heard of them. But, you definitely know about what they are doing now. Graham-Paige was a car maker, but almost never made money at it. They limped through the Great Depression, was saved by military contracts during the war, and then sold their car business to Kaiser-Frazer not long after the war ended.

Their corporation did not stand still, investing heavily in real estate until the 60′s, when they bought Madison Square Garden. They eventually changed their name to the Madison Square Garden Corporation. Though they have been purchased, their lineage is still there.
So, why even discuss these? It’s all about exceptionalism. The people in charge of these corporations could have hung it up, and left their investors out to dry. After all, their main business failed. However, they found a different way. They did what it took to offer something, and as a result, they became profitable. That led to jobs for others. Had they simply hung it up, many more people would be out of work. These folks exemplify the “don’t give up” attitude that we need to emulate as we engage in the restoration of our Republic. We will have setbacks and losses, but we can’t give up, even if we have to take a different path to get there.

Once again you hit a home run with this feature.
Thanks for the linkage [and the useful links].
Thanks you, Bob. Your place will always be one of my regular stops.
That Studebaker is quite good-looking, the black coupe.
That car was at least 10 years ahead of it’s time, in terms of design. Sadly, their management decided to tool up for more sedans than coupes. It was a major issue. People didn’t seem to appreciate them then, but they are collectible now.
Thanks for the link, Matt. I didn’t expect it to happen, but it seems I am focusing more and more on state politics.
I’ve been paying more attention to it as well. I think it’s a positive.
I love the picture of the Studebaker.
When I was a junior in High School (Back when Dinosuars roamed the earth) I had a friend whose car was a Studebaker. He hated it. We all laughed at it. He used to take it out and run into stuff trying to destroy it so his dad would let him get something else.
Today I think often of the joy rides of destruction in that Stude. Oh to be able to go back in time and slap some sense into my friend.
A lot of people would like that Studebaker now. It’s funny how that works out.
Thanks for the link, Matt. Loved the REO Speedwagon music and the cars were pretty cool too!
I added the music later. It seemed to fit.
Thanks for the link.
Even more, thanks for the REO!
Neat cars and neat links…especially mine
Seriously, thanks for the link Matt. I’m glad you thought my crap was cool.
Thanks for the link Matt. Now what if Graham-Paige would have been given a bailout?
