The news just keeps getting worse for the Democrats. According to CNN, the Democrats are down 7% on a generic ballot to the GOP.
According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday, the GOP leads the Democrats by 7 points on the “generic ballot” question, 52 percent to 45 percent. That 7-point advantage is up from a 3-point margin last month.
The generic ballot question asks respondents if they would vote for a Democrat or Republican in their congressional district, without naming any specific candidates.
“The survey indicates that independents and voters who dislike both parties are starting to break toward the GOP,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “In a year when anger at incumbents is a dominant political force, the key to the election lies among those who aren’t rooting for either side.”
We know the Conservative base is smelling blood, and look to show up in perhaps record numbers. They are energized to an extent that I’ve never before seen, but what of Independents?
Republicans also have a large and growing advantage among independents. Sixty-two percent of independents questioned say they would vote for the generic Republican in their district, with three in 10 saying they’d cast a ballot for the generic Democrat. That 32-point margin for the Republicans among independents is up from an 8-point advantage last month.
The CNN report goes on to minimize the “referendum on Obama” that is clearly part of this coming election. However, after almost two years in office, and much of that with supermajorities in both houses, they passed a Porkulus that accomplished nothing. They took over two car companies, and created banking regulations that increased costs for us. They oversaw the loss of millions of jobs. Did I mention the massive fail that is ObamaCare? If folks aren’t upset about all of that (and more), they are zombies.
This might be the beginning of some spin to cover Obama while his house of cards falls around him.
While the CNN poll seems dire, the latest Rasmussen poll continues to track towards apocalyptic numbers for the Democrats.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% of Likely Voters would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate, while 36% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent. The survey data was collected on the seven days ending Sunday, September 5, 2010.
This matches the largest advantage ever measured for the Republicans. Three weeks ago, the GOP also held a 12-point lead.
What makes this poll more apocalyptic is not just the numbers, it’s that Rasmussen is the only organization that polls only likely voters.
Unless something drastic happens, like an asteroid hitting the planet, congressional Democrats should start packing their bags.

I would also trust the Rasmussen poll more, but the fact that a CNN poll has Obama down by that much is telling. Even CNN cannot hide from Obama’s dismal numbers, they may just try to skew them a little bit.
The most troubling thing for Obama has to be the way independents are leaving him, he canot win without them.
So true about the independents. They can’t win dog catcher without them.
Had it not been for the independent voters in 2008, Barack Obama would not have moved into the White House. I think it’s becoming more and more apparent to them that his version of hope and change is not exactly what they had in mind. By proxy, that is why the poll numbers are looking so badly for the Democrats. Couple that with their actions and it is really looking bad for them in November.
Very true Larry. It the 20-40-40 split, and the libs can’t afford to lose ANY independents.
Good news for the GOP. Let’s hope that the GOP can live up to the task, because if they don’t, the vicious cycle begins again.
My hope is that the GOP grassroots candidates that will be elected in November can make the difference (not like the Blue Dog Dems who melted down under the pressure of the “ruling class” Dems like Pelosi & Reid). Some of the “ruling class” GOP will still be there and may try to manipulate the new guys. We must hold their feet to the fire.
I agree TCL. RINOS are always a concern. We’ve axed a few, but it’ll take years to get to them all, even if that’s possible.
I think folks are ready to hold their feet to the fire.
I love that pic. There is going to be a bloodbath.
I just hope all the good poll numbers don’t let people rest. We must get out the vote and make sure we don’t become complacent.
Very true. It’s like being up 28-14 in the 4th quarter. You don’t let up.
If an asteroid does hit Earth, I’m sure Bush will be blamed.
It’s going to be fun the day after the election watching the press spin it as “not really a referendum on President Obama or his policies.”
Come on, Infidel, you know Bush, Exxon-Mobile, Halliburton, and Dick Cheny all planned to hit the Earth with a asteroid!
I’m waiting for the full spin as well. The question is how far will the MSM go to defend him?
These are good stats, and I do hope that people are indeed shifting their support. The problem will still be that large number of Liberal/Pregressive nutbars.
Yes, there are a large number, but the numbers that have been thrown around are this:
20% of the population self identify as liberal.
about 40% identify as independent. And slightly over 40% identify as Conservative. The Independents are trending out way.
Thanks for the numbers Matt! I am glad the Democrats are getting what they asked for over the past months. However, we conservatives must keep fighting the “RINOs” within the GOP from corrupting everything we are working hard for right now. Keep on keeping on!
The struggle against the RINOS and the party leadership is far from over. We’ll either drive them out, or form another party. However, if it comes to another party, we’re getting into a position to take most of the GOP with us.
This is very good news, but like Jason I have deep concerns about the RINOs. We gain nothing if in a close vote a Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe want to reach across the aisle and make something happen. It will take a few cycles to get these RINOs out. Great post Matt!
You’re right John. It’ll take time. We’ll either win, or turn them into the Whigs.
I have to admit that I relish hearing bad numbers for the Dems these day. There is at least a half-dozen Republicans that I wouldn’t mind losing their seats as well. No matter how it works out it is unlikely that I will get all that I want. Oh well.
Think there is anyway we can get Barry to resign? Didn’t think so. Dang.
Thanks Matt. Hope is what keeps us focused.
