Fox News broke with a story at just after 2:00 a.m. EST that GOP Nominee Mitt Romney has made his choice for the Veepstakes:

“A Republican with knowledge of the development confirmed the selection to the AP, hours ahead of an official announcement during a campaign stop Saturday morning in Norfolk, Va. Romney will then launch his “The Romney Plan For A Stronger Middle Class” bus tour.

The selection comes roughly two weeks before the start of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and gives Romney plenty of space to rally the party behind his pick before the official nomination.”

He will officially announce it Saturday morning in Norfolk, VA at an event on the USS Wisconsin at around 8:45 a.m. EST. It is not known at this time if Congressman Ryan will accept the nomination or decline it. He did decline to run for President this cycle, so only time will tell.

FWIW I think Paul Ryan is a great choice, it will allow Romney to have Ryan tackle the budget process while he focuses on job-creation for the remainder of the campaign.

  • I think this is a good pick as well, I was getting worried it was going to be Pawlenty. My only worry is that this will play into the communist style class warfare campaign Obama is running.

  • I am pleased with this choice. I think it was Rich Lowry that said picking Paul Ryan plays into Romney’s CEO persona. He wants to manage and Ryan can help him do that.

  • Don, thanks for posting this. I woke up early and found the good news in my Inbox from you. I think that Paul Ryan is an astute choice and for sure someone that Romney “can have conversations with and take over the reins if necessary,” as MR said earlier on. Let’s watch this and see the fun begin.

How many income-tax returns did Paul Ryan submit to the OMitt campaign prior to being selected for VP? How many income-tax returns will Paul Ryan release to the people of USA?

Who cares? I am sure it is more than Harry Reid and Debbie “Was A Man” Schultz has submitted.

  • I was also worried that Romney was going to pick Pawlenty. Portman who? Paul Ryan is a great choice for VP. But I think Romney may have realized that he needed to appeal to conservatives as well as those in the middle who care about the fiscal state of the country.

I take his choice of Veep as a sign that he is trying to pull the party together, much like Reagan did in 1980. Reagan would have preferred a more conservative Veep, but chose H.W. Bush after their bitter primary in order to bring unity to the GOP.

Since it seems Romney is doing something similar, then it is a good sign and shows that despite his lack of conservative credentials, he is listening to his base.
