In the newsletter I receive from Crisis Magazine, there is an article entitled “Political Correctness Reaches New Low in UK” by Theodore Dalrymple. In that article he shares the story about a family, in Rotherham England, who has been foster-care parents for the last seven years. Recently, the Rotherham Borough Council’s Strategic Director of Children and Young People’s Services, Joyce Thacker, made the decision to remove three children from their care because they are members of the UK Independent Party (UKIP).
I don’t know a whole lot about politics in England or much about the UKIP, except for what I’ve read recently on the internet. However, they sound somewhat similar to the Libertarian Party here in the United States. They believe in sovereignty and want England to pull out of the European Union. They believe in small government. They also believe there should be tougher immigration policies or what Thacker calls “an end to multiculturalism”. However their platform states that yes, they do reject multiculturalism but instead they support “uni-culturalism, a single British culture embracing all races, religions and colours”.
The three children were living with this couple for eight weeks when the decision to take them away from the parents was made. The worst part of the whole thing is that the children were NOT taken from the couple because of abuse or neglect. They were taken away from the couple on the sole grounds that they are members of the UK Independent Party which has been deemed by the local council to be racist. Since the three children are “not indigenous white British”, the council and Ms. Thacker feel that long term the children would be negatively influenced by the foster parents.
The leader of the UK Independent Party, Nigel Farage, says that Ms. Thacker should be fired and heads should roll and has even said that a legal route may be taken to return the children to the family and for disciplinary action to be taken toward the Rotherham Council. At this point, it appears to me that people at various levels of government are passing the buck and placing blame, but Joyce Thacker still says “she did not regret the decision, which was reached after ‘a lot of soul searching’”.
The reason I wanted to bring this story to everyone’s attention after I learned about it is because of the direction our own country, the United States, is headed. You hear every day about what you can and cannot say and do because it is “politically incorrect”. You hear quite often that if you are against lax immigration or are against the Obama Administration, that you are a “racist”.
I whole-heartedly feel that this scenario in this real life story can and will occur in our country. I also believe that it will not be a long time in the future. The direction our country is going, I believe that individuals and various political parties who do not believe in or agree with the big government, socially lax, center to left leaning beliefs, will be more and more marginalized and discriminated
