This is obviously a horrific disaster, we offer our thoughts and prayers to the victims, their families, as well as the rescue personnel that are putting their lives on the line to help others.

Update #2: 1:00 AM EST

This is my last update for the night, Riehl World View has video of the explosion taken by a bystander…

  • This is obviously a horrific explosion and our thoughts are to the devastated community. But it also points out a larger and to my mind troubling and annoying trend:

Since the advent of 24 hour cable news channels the concept of “local” news has evaporated. Everything it seems now is “breaking news” of vast importance to the entire country, whether it be a car chase in California or a fertilizer plant explosion.

Fires happen. And a fire in a fertilizer plant has a tendency to lead to an explosion which is what happened here.

My point being: This is a local story. Unfortunate, yes. But local.
