“The filibuster is … part of the fabric of this institution … it is an integral part of our country’s 217 years of history. It encourages moderation and consensus … It gives voice to the minority, so that cooler heads may prevail … the filibuster is a critical tool in keeping the majority in check … the filibuster serves as a check on power and preserves our limited government.” — Harry Reid, 2005
“Congress should be passing legislation that strengthens our economy and protects American families. Instead we’re burning wasted hours and wasted days between filibusters.” – Harry Reid, 2013
Getting rid of the filibuster “certainly is not what the patriots who founded this democracy had in mind.” – Barack Obama, 2005
Using the filibuster is “not what our Founders envisioned.” – Barack Obama, 2013
“The American people believe the Senate is broken,” said Harry Reid. Well, the Desert Rat will get no argument from this American person — and the main reason it’s broken is because we’ve let people like him in there. For Democrats like Reid and Obama — the one a corrupt partisan hack, the other an uncarded commie — the end always justifies the means. Today’s principles are tomorrow’s sweepings. All politicians stretch the truth; these thugs strap it to a butcher’s block and fry its tender feet with a blowtorch. And if anyone still proves hardy enough to oppose them, they’ll break his knees with a Saul Alinsky model Louisville Slugger. Which is what the progressives’ bludgeoning of the Senate’s venerable filibuster was all about. After all, Big Red warned ‘em:
Obama made the unprecedented move last week of nominating three reliable, Washington-centric liberals to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, commonly known as the D.C. Circuit.
Obama defied Republicans to block the nominations. “This is not about principled opposition,” said Obama. “This is about political obstruction …
Obama’s henchmen let it be known that if Republicans try to block confirmation, the reliable Harry Reid would moved forward with the so-called Nuclear Option, blow up any resemblance of bi-partisanship, and confirm the three nominees with 51 Democrat votes.
… The D.C. Circuit is the linchpin in the advance of the Administrative State; it is the court where Obama’s end-runs around Congress and constitutional government will either be upheld or sent to the trash pile. Obama, not having a rubber-stamp Congress, is busy expanding federal power by regulations issued by independent agencies, cabinet departments, and executive orders. Challenges to such actions usually go directly to the D.C. Circuit, making a left-wing majority on that court a necessity if Obama hopes to make his leftward lurch survive. (Obama’s Court Packing Plan)
The shocking fact is that our whole system of representative government depends on it being led by an individual who believes in it; who thinks it is valuable; who believes that a government dedicated to the protection of individual rights is a noble ideal. What if he does not?
Mr. Obama is moving our government away from its traditional system of checks and balances and toward the one-man-rule that dominates third world countries. (Forbes)
