How Hope can Kill the Progressive Agenda:  My thoughts from 2010 on how regressives have to kill hope in order to subjugate the masses.

The POTUS used “Hope” as a slogan during his campaign.  While we would argue that “hope” has nothing to do with Obama’s policies, there is a different context for it.

The progressive agenda has nothing to do with hope; it is a proposal for a control mechanism, nothing more.

  • Health care for all?  Not necessarily.  CONTROL of healthcare?  Absolutely!
  • Financial reform?   Not so much. CONTROL of the financial sector?  Yup!
  • Dealing with “Climate Change” saving the planet?  Not even close.   Massive redistribution program?  YES!

I could go on and on, but I think the point is made.  If there is any hope there at all, it is only the “progressive’s” hope for total control of all human activity.

But what of real hope?  Here is the definition.

hope

/ho?p/ Show Spelled [hohp] Show IPA noun, verb, hoped, hop·ing.

–noun

1. The feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best: to give up hope.

2. A particular instance of this feeling: the hope of winning.

How can we say that the “hope” that Obama advertised is actual hope?  His policies and actions have made things worse, just as we predicted.  Unemployment has gone up.  Debt has risen to unsustainable levels.  People are losing their health coverage and doctors.  Our standing in the world has decreased, as foreign powers ridicule him.  Businesses refuse to hire over the uncertainty of tax increases and excessive regulation.  Corruption has increased.  If anything, actual hope has decreased.  Frankly, I believe that this is the intent.

I think that this boils down to an old quote that I had heard years ago.  I believe it shows us what is happening.  Excuse my paraphrase.

“A man is useless to the socialist state until he has given up all hope.”

Kindly consider that in any totalitarian system, individuals cannot succeed in as much that the government permits them.  All phases in the life of the individual is under the control of the state.  Housing, education, work, wages, retirement, medical care, transportation,  and even diet, are all dictated by the state.  How can hope exist in that environment?  The state assumes the control of an individual at birth, and doesn’t let go until they die.  I would suggest that hope is derived from the ability to actively engage in efforts to improve one’s situation.  If one had no control or influence over even the most basic aspects of their lives, how can they hope for anything?  If personal effort, ideas, or labor will not change an individual’s situation, why would they try?

I would submit that this is the general intent of the totalitarian system.   If a person has given up all hope, they will completely submit to the state’s control.  This submission would not be due to the superiority of the state’s position or it’s services, it would come after the realization that there are no alternatives.  The end result would be a discouraged citizen that would not only comply, but eventually wouldn’t even think about having hope for anything else. This is the soul crushing lack of personal will that gripped the population of the former Soviet Bloc.

We can also see this in how the former Soviet Bloc nations presented information to their citizens.  In the late 60’s, the Soviets had some difficulty in keeping their client states subjugated.  The Czechs, in particular, wanted freedom, and at least in that nation, Soviet troops were needed to crush freedom movements.  Therefore, throughout the Vietnam War period, the state controlled media behind the iron curtain piped as much information about American “atrocities,” (The Russians now admit to staging ones that never happened) and student protests as they possibly could.  This was, of course, to smear the American cause in Vietnam, but it was also to crush any hope for freedom among their own citizens.  The anti-war protests in the west were portrayed as a successful communist revolution (they were, in many ways, just that).

The overall goal was to discourage the people that sought freedom.  The United States represented the best hope for human freedom on Earth.  The people that were trapped behind the iron curtain looked to the US for hope (of freedom).  When the Soviets and their puppets broadcast the protests, and spun the coverage, it looked as if Americans were losing their freedom.  It was made to appear that there was no longer an alternative.  The Soviets couldn’t destroy America, but they could use their control of information to destroy the IDEA of America, at least among their own populations.    Again, causing the people to give up hope, and submit to the all-powerful state, as there appeared to be no alternatives.

Many people have asked why our “progressives” don’t go to Cuba, or some other Communist nation to live?  The true answer to that is relatively simple.  If America exists as a free nation, and our Constitution remains intact, it will continue to be a beacon of hope to the oppressed nations of the world.  As long as we remain a free state that protects human freedom, economically outperforms the rest of the world, and provides more wealth to more people, socialism will continue to pale by comparison.  As long as there is true hope for human freedom, and the individual opportunity that comes with it, people will continue to desire it.  Therefore, America, and the ideas that are associated with it, must be destroyed.  So, our left stays, and works hard at destroying America.  If they can accomplish that goal, they will not only end human freedom on this continent, but all over the planet.  Socialism will grow in control unimpeded, as there will be no alternative.  Eventually, the idea and reality of the United States would be scrubbed from history, and sent down the memory hole.  In a few generations, most people would never know that there ever was an alternative.

That’s what the “progressives” want.

Such is the extent of control, and the elimination of hope that is required by the left, that they don’t want their subjects thinking that even an after-life can be better.

In 1979, the Three-Self Church reemerged under the control of the Chinese government, which monitors its activities. Certain topics were off limits, including the Second Coming of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the establishment of the kingdom of God. Teaching from books of prophecy that predict the end times — such as Daniel and Revelation — was prohibited. The church’s influence over teenagers and younger children was severely limited. The government oversees clergy education and retains the right to review sermons to assure compliance with government restrictions. (Emphasis mine)

You see, the nanny state wants to take the place of God.  And, apparently, the god of the nanny state is a rather jealous one.  People cannot look forward to a day when God will save them.  They cannot look forward, with hope, to a day that they will be in paradise.  Even more so, they cannot look forward to the day when their savior might return.  The nanny god will have no other God before him.  Any other faith, and especially the Christian God and Savior, puts the state in a subservient position to God.  For the “progressive,” obedience to the state is first and foremost, so either Christianity must change, or it must go.

I realize that I am not painting a pretty picture.  Things do look rather grim.  Of course, that too, is a goal for the left.  Eventually, our “progressives” want us to give up on freedom, and seek the cold, unloving embrace of big brother.  However, it doesn’t have to be that way.  Let’s take a look at recent history, and see what happened when people found hope.

After a national pattern of high taxation, failure, and appeasement, Ronald Reagan was elected President.  In a single day, our pattern of engagement with the Soviet Union changed.  After a decade of high taxes and stagflation, the American economy boomed.  After the “malaise” of the inept Carter administration, the American people gained more pride in our nation, as well as in it’s future.  After a nearly a decade of neglect, President Reagan modernized and strengthened our military.  And, more importantly, Reagan challenged the Soviet Union directly.  Our diplomacy turned from one of capitulation, to one of confrontation.  This confrontation is perhaps best exemplified by the statement President Reagan made in Berlin…

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”

The meaning of this change in diplomacy was not lost on the people of Eastern Europe.  They heard of Reagan, through radio and more clandestine means.  And as Reagan’s military buildup pushed the socialist economies of the Soviet Bloc to the breaking point, the differences between free and socialist states became all the more clear.  The people started seeing through the lies that they were being told, and gained hope for the freedom and prosperity that are available in the US.

The rest, as they say, was history.  As the Socialist nations crumbled, their people simply stopped believing in the false claims of their leaders and socialism.  They had heard of the US, and of Reagan, and of the ideas that formed this nation.  With that hope, they found the bravery to risk the wrath of the state.  Then, the states fell.  It is well known that in many homes in Eastern Europe, hangs a picture of Ronald Reagan.  The left may deny his influence, but the people who lived under tyranny kept score on their own.

So where does that leave us now?  While we are close to losing our Republic, we are also able to achieve victory.  The real choice is with us.  Will we lose hope, and give up to the state, just as our would-be masters would want, or will we realize that we can hold on to our hope?  We have to realize that it’s up to us and it’s right now.  We need to take some pages out of Reagan’s book.  We need to confront the left strongly, and give alternatives.  We need to be bold and confident. We are right.  We have evidence, and we need to spread the hope that springs from individual freedom,  a Constitutional Republic, and a real free market.  We need to spread the hope that comes with the ability to change one’s lot in life.  If we do these, and it will be a long and difficult ride, we can free the minds of millions more our fellow citizens.  Then, our socialist system will collapse under it’s own failure.

We’re #2! We’re #2! Obamanomics Drops US Economy To 2nd Place, Behind China

Share

 photo beijing-population-2013_zps4182d5a1.jpg

The next phase of Dear Leader’s “fundamental transformation” of America is complete. With our economy in tatters, China is now the world’s number 1 economic powerhouse.

We’re no longer No. 1. Today we’re No. 2. Yes, it’s official. The Chinese economy just overtook the United States economy to become the largest in the world. For the first time since Ulysses S. Grant was president, America is no longer the leading economic power on the planet.

The International Monetary Fund recently released the latest numbers for the world economy. And when you measure national economic output in “real” terms of goods and services, China will this year produce $17.6 trillion — compared to $17.4 trillion for the U.S.A.

As recently as 2000, we produced nearly three times as much as the Chinese.

To put the numbers slightly differently, China now accounts for 16.5% of the global economy when measured in real purchasing power terms, compared to 16.3% for the U.S.

This latest economic earthquake follows the development last year when China surpassed the U.S. for the first time in terms of global trade.

These calculations are based on a well-established and widely used economic measure known as “purchasing power parity” (or PPP), which measures the actual output as opposed to fluctuations in foreign exchange rates. So a Starbucks Venti Frappucino served in Beijing counts the same as a Venti Frappucino served in Minneapolis, regardless of what happens to be going on among foreign exchange traders.

PPP is the real way of comparing economies. It is one reported by the IMF and was, for example, the one used by McKinsey & Co. consultants back in the 1990s when they undertook a study of economic productivity on behalf of the British government.

Make no mistake. This is a geopolitical earthquake with a high reading on the Richter scale. Throughout history, political and military power have always depended on economic power. Britain was the workshop of the world before she ruled the waves. And it was Britain’s relative economic decline that preceded the collapse of her power.

And it was a similar story with previous hegemonic powers such as France and Spain.

Collapsing the power of the United States is Obama’s stated goal. He was indoctrinated in the anti-colonialist dialectic at his father’s knee, and forged in radical Marxism by Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. Here you have the inevitable result of his presidency — a measurable, and probably irreversable, decline of American power and influence.

Our children will live in a world dominated by communist China. Think about that. Think long and hard, and thank an Obama voter for making the future bleaker for everyone.

Chinese State Media Demands US Citizens Be Disarmed

Share

Hat/Tip to Brandon Darby at Breitbart.

So the murderous regime that is the Chinese government is now seeing fit to lecture us on the 2nd Amendment.

The Chinese state-controlled media’s statement, titled “Innocent Blood Demands No Delay for US Gun Control,” is primarily focused on the Newtown tragedy in which 26 Americans were killed by a mad gunman. Twenty of the victims were young children.

The Chinese government stated, “Their blood and tears demand no delay for the U.S. gun control.”

It would seem that the Chinese powers that be feel that they need to engage in propaganda to subvert freedom. So they tell of tragic episodes when deranged people use a gun as their choice of weapon to slaughter innocent people, but they leave out the parts of the stories where lawful gun owners put an end to the shooters’ rampages.

In an apparent effort to restrict information to their populace, the Chinese government wrote of a number of US mass shootings but failed to mention they were either stopped by a citizen legally carrying a firearm or otherwise only occurred in the controversial gun-free zones that critics say make prime targets for madmen.

The Chinese government states:

The past six months have seen enough shooting rampages in the United States. Just three days ago, three people were shot dead at a shopping mall in Oregon. Two weeks ago, a football player shot his girlfriend dead and then committed suicide. Five months ago, 12 people were killed and 58 wounded in a shooting spree at a midnight screening of a Batman film in Colorado.

The government went on to express a strong dislike of the National Rifle Association while also attacking the Republican Party as somehow complicit in the violence. Conversely, the article heaps praise on the Democratic Party:

The Clinton government launched a series of gun control policies at the end of last century. And the Democrats lost the Congressional election in 1994 and the presidential election in 2000, with the shadow of the NRA present in both defeats.

Isn’t it ironic that a regime known for the slaughter and genocide of TENS OF MILLIONS of innocents is in favor of taking away the right to bear arms?

The current Chinese government, the communist People’s Republic of China, was established in a revolution led by Mao Zedong, who killed an estimated 40-70 million people with starvation, executions, and re-education camps.

China Hard at Work on Super Sonic Submarine

Share

 photo supersonicsubmarinetheory_zpsb0479703.jpg

Hat/Tip to Newsmax.

It may sound like science fiction or something you’d see on the SyFy Channel, but China is working on just this very thing.

The “air bubble” theory that would allow a submarine to move through the ocean at supersonic speed could be closer to reality through the work of Chinese scientists.

Called “supercavitating,” the theory is being developed into new technology by scientists at the Harbin Institute of Technology’s Complex Flow and Heat Transfer Lab, according to the South China Morning Post, and it could allow a submarine to reach supersonic speed underwater.

The “air bubble” technology would allow a submarine to travel from Shanghai to San Francisco in less than two hours, if the technology can actually be pulled off, according to the newspaper.

The idea behind this theory isn’t new. It stems from a Cold War era weapon developed by the Soviet Union.

“This technique was originally developed for Shakval, a torpedo capable of reaching 230 miles per hour developed by the Soviet Navy during the Cold War,” wrote Omar Kardoudi, of the blog Sploid.

“The size of the bubble and the speed was limited. Now this new Chinese research claims they have found a way to generate a much bigger air bubble, drastically reducing friction of large underwater vessels. They say they would be able to create a full-size supercavitating submarine capable of reaching the speed of sound underwater,” wrote Kardoudi.

As with any new technology, there are problems and obstacles to be overcome.

Fenghen explained that water creates friction and drag, but the theory of surrounding an object like a submarine with a bubble eliminates the friction problem the water causes. One of the major hurdles for the technology is that the vessel would have to be launched at a high speed to maintain the air bubble.

Scientists told the Morning Post said a second problem with the current technology is that that the bubble cannot be maintained if it is steered in any direction, meaning it can only be directed in a straight line and not guided to a particular direction.

The New World “disOrder” Is On The Horizon: The Orchestrated Decline of America

Share

America’s world dominance since the break up of the Soviet Union is coming to an end. Pundits will write millions of words debating the “how” and the “why” of America’s fall from grace. To borrow a phrase from our current esteemed leader,  America has been  punching above its weight class, for many years. Our government has spent more than it has taken in for over three decades.

Things took a decided turn for the worse during the G. W. Bush administration. The Clinton administration had the benefit of the inflating Dot.com bubble and the inflating housing bubble and, as a result, managed to balance the budget. The Dot.com bubble burst early in Bush’s first term and the housing bubble burst late in his last term. In between he passed the costly Medicare-Part D and al Qaeda attacked America, which brought us two long, costly, and bloody wars. The national debt went up $5 trillion on Bush’s eight year watch.

Then America blessed itself by electing Barack Obama to two terms of office. His response to the Great Recession was to run up the national debt $5.5 trillion in less than five and one half years and most Americans feel like they are still living in a recession.

So, today we find America funding all of its spending programs, including its vaunted military, by having to borrow 40% of its budget from China, Japan, individual investors, and most recently from the Federal Reserve (The Fed has no money of its own, but it can create money out of thin air). Can anyone really be surprised that America is losing its influence in the world? The world’s most awesome military aside, how can a beggar nation continue to be the world’s “benevolent” policeman? It can not!

America’s decline has been evident to the rest of the world for some time. Many have been the critics of America’s dominate role in world affairs. This criticism worried Harvard history professor, Naill Ferguson, when he wrote a 2004 Foreign Policy article titled, A World Without Power.

Critics of U.S. global dominance should pause and consider the alternative. If the United States retreats from its hegemonic role, who would supplant it? Not Europe, not China, not the Muslim world — and certainly not the United Nations. Unfortunately, the alternative to a single superpower is not a multilateral utopia, but the anarchic nightmare of a new Dark Age.

Now ten years later another pundit writes a very similar opinion. Daniel Greenfield is an Israeli living in New York where he is a professional journalist. He also writes the Sultan Knish blog where you will find his recent essay titled: The Shape of a Post-American World. He starts his essay with this:

The post-American world will be many things, but multilateral isn’t one of them. There will be no world government and international organizations will be good for little except sucking up the last drops of wealth and prestige of the United States. It will be a chaotic place with everyone out for themselves.

And, he ends with this:

The civilized world faces economic, demographic and military crises that it has a limited time frame in which to meet and resolve. If it fails to do that, the civilization in which we have grown up and which we have known all our lives will die and a long interregnum of darkness will follow in its wake.

I do hope you will take the time to read the Greenfield article because, between the two paragraphs quoted above, he offers much food for thought. He talks about the coming of a new world order of China, Russia and the US. He talks at length about the demographic problems facing each of these nations and the general decline of Europe’s influence in world affairs. Greenfield also talks of a fourth power in the world that is not a nation but an ideology and the fastest growing demographic in the world _ that being Islam. He makes the point that, although it would seem reasonable for China, Russia, and the US to see Islam as their common enemy, the leaders of these countries do not see it that way. He use Russia and the US as examples:

… Putin fights some Islamists while incorporating others into his allied clergy and helping still others go nuclear. The United States bombs the Taliban, but would never consider bombing their paymasters in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.

But, the Islam issue aside, Greenfield doesn’t think that China, Russia, and the US will be able to hold their positions of power in the long run. This paragraph comes close to summing up his view point:

Russia, China and the United States are all demographically unstable. Russia and the United States are both on track to become majority-minority countries. China’s demographic disaster will be the outcome of its one child policies, gender abortion and its war on the countryside. The United States will probably weather its demographic problems better than Russia or China, because the former faces a fatal Muslim demographic takeover and the latter a conflict that will tear its society apart, but like Russia and China, the demographic crisis in the United States will be exacerbated by the lack of common bonds to see it through a period of social stress.

Clearly Mr. Greenfield’s view is as dark today as that which worried Professor Ferguson in 2004. What do you think of Mr. Greenfield’s view of a post-American world? That America is losing its hegemonic role in the world seems obvious. It’s just as obvious that China and Russia will expand their spheres of influence both individually and jointly (Middle East). The big question to me is not the demographic issues raised by Mr. Greenfield but rather: will the leaders of China and Russia be wise enough to expand their spheres of influence without bringing down the fragile international financial system?

And I was so sure that my tour of duty in this life would end before the SHTF. Silly me!

Well, that’s what I’m thinking. What are your thoughts?

Senate advances bill to bail out Russia and China. Will the House go along?

Share

What? You say you haven’t heard about this bill. It’s been in the news : By a 78-17 vote, the Senate voted to advance the bill to a final vote, which is likely to occur sometime later this week. Actually there is a good reason you haven’t heard of the bill to bail out Russia and China. Those sneaky devils in Washington were clever enough not to mention Russia or China in the bill. It’s called the Ukraine Aid bill. The Senate wants you rich Americans to give poor Ukraine $1 billion. That will make Mr. Putin very happy since $1 billion is exactly the amount of the Ukraine’s over due gas bill with Russia.

The bill is expected to meet stiff opposition when it goes to the House. Not because the House members don’t want to spend your tax dollars on the Ukraine. They do! But, the sneaky devils in the Senate added language to  reform to the way the US funds the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF, of course, wants more of your money and they want the US to have less say on how they spend it. The IMF already gets most of its money from you and, whether or not the final bill is passed with or without the IMF reform language, you can bet they are chomping at the bit to loan a bunch of your money to the Ukraine. That, my friends, is going to make China very happy because: China Takes Sides: Sues Ukraine $3 bn Loan Repayment.

We shouldn’t worry though. We are already taking on $1 trillion a year in new debt. What’s another few billion dollars more? Our kids and grandkids will be good for it, right?

Well, that’s what I’m thinking. What are your thoughts?

Putin Strikeouts Obama-Will Barry Do Something Stupid?

Share

To no one’s surprise, the people of Crimea voted overwhelmingly yesterday to become part of Russia. In a few days or a few months, it will be a fait accompli and the Crimea will once again be part of Russia.

That is Strike 3, Barry!

Strike 1 _  Barry’s Russian Reset was a one-sided when for Putin. Barry agreed not to build the missile shield in Eastern Europe and Putin agreed to accept that idea.

Strike 2 _ Barry was all puffed up after tumbling the governments of Egypt and Libya he thought he could do the same thing in Syria. But, Putin threw him a curve ball and Barry whiffed.

Strike 3 _ Barry and his friends in the EU have had their eye on the Ukraine for a long time. The EU would like the Ukraine to come into their fold so that they are in a better position to negotiate gas price with the Russians. Barry and his NATO allies would like to pressure Russia by having NATO forces on the Russian border. You can see why Putin might see these intentions being against Russian interests. So, the recent ouster of Ukraine’s “democratically” elected president was seen by Putin as a coup that was funded secretly by Barry and  his EU buddies. (Ask yourself if the governments of France or Canada had been overthrown in the same manner  would the US and the EU have been so quick to recognize the new governments?) At any rate, Barry and his friends over played their hand and apparently didn’t expect Putin to react so decidedly and quickly.

Barry is complaining that Putin’s Crimean pitch was low and outside. He has warned Putin that Russia would pay a price for what they have done. Putin warned Barry that hurting the Russian economy would backfire on the US.

Will Barry do something stupid? Is Putin bluffing? I think the answer to the first question is yes and the answer to the second question is no.

Fox News is reporting that Barry and his EU friends have made their first move.

The White House has announced new sanctions against seven Russian officials in retaliation for Ukraine’s Crimea region voting to join Russia, as the European Union announced similar penalties.

If that is the sum total of what Barry and the EU are prepared to do, then no real harm and no foul. However, if they go much further, their sanctions on Russia are likely to backfire in Barry’s face and the same for Europe. Here is another quote from that Fox News article:

Before Monday’s meeting in Brussels, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said sanctions must leave “ways and possibilities open to prevent a further escalation that could lead to the division of Europe.”

Could lead to the division of Europe? He’s talking about Germany of course. This article may explain his concern:

Anton Börner, president of the German Association of Exporters (BGA), which represents 120,000 companies, the lifeblood of the economy, warned at a press conference in Berlin that further escalation of the crisis in the Ukraine could hit exporters very hard. He said that the BGA expected exports to rise 3% to €1.13 trillion and imports 2% to €914 billion for a trade surplus of €215.6 billion – the highest in history. But “if the crisis in the Crimea escalates further,” these wondrous forecasts of endlessly growing exports and surpluses “could turn very quickly into a mal-calculation.”

{…}

It isn’t just German exporters that are fretting, and lobbying with all their might. Russia, with an economy that is already stagnating, and dogged by vicious bouts of capital flight, has$732 billion in foreign debt. Relatively little of it is sovereign debt, but nearly $700 billion is owed by banks and corporations – most of them owned or controlled by the Kremlin. Oil major Rosneft and gas mastodon Gazprom owe $90 billion combined to foreign entities; the four state banks Sberbank, VTB, VEB, and Rosselkhozbank owe $60 billion. Some of this debt matures this year and next year.

{…}

Some European banks, including some German banks, might crater. Even the possibility of a major loss would further rattle the confidence in these banks with their over-leveraged and inscrutable balance sheets and their assets that are still exuding whiffs of putrefaction. And this sort of fiasco, as the financial crisis has made clear, has an unpleasant way of snowballing – and taking down the already shaky global economy with it.

Yes indeed! One should be careful about those unintended consequences. But, if Barry goes too far, Russia has promised to attack the US dollar. How could a small economy like Russia harm the mighty US dollar, you ask? This excellent article explains (H/T to my friend, 5etester):

From the economic point of view, everyone should get ready for tough actions from Moscow. Sergei Glazyev, the most hardline of Putin’s advisors, sketched the retaliation strategy: Drop the dollar, sell US Treasuries, encourage Russian companies to default on their dollar-denominated debts, and create an alternative currency system (reference currency) with the BRICS and hydrocarbon producers like Venezuela and Iran.

{…}

“Why should we have dollar contracts with China, India, Turkey?” he said. “Why do we need this? We must have contracts in national currencies. And this applies to energy and other spheres.” The focus would be on Russian oil and gas companies. “They must be braver in signing contracts in rubles and the currencies of partner-countries,” he said. “I think now there is an additional impetus to finally finish this job.”

And the “currency reserve policy” would need some adjustment with maximum focus on “local currencies”; it was the normal way, he said. In Mândr??escu’s analysis, Ulyukaev was outlining an attack on the petrodollar system and the enormous advantages it confers on the US, with the goal of creating parallel petro-currencies.

Russia would need the help of China to bring down the dollar and that could very well happen.

I want to believe that Barry has some smart people advising him on the dangers of pushing Putin too far. But will he listen to them?

Well, that’s what I’m thinking. What are your thoughts?

Some Brief Thoughts on Putin, the Ukraine, and the Weakness of Barak Hussein Obama

Share

If you recall, in 2009 on the heels of his infamous World Apology Tour, Barak Obama paid a visit to Russia, where he was famously snubbed in a receiving line.  The Nice Deb covered that at the time…

After bowing to foreign kings, and after a career of community organizing, dithering, and overall liberalism, foreign powers came to the same conclusion as informed voters here in the US:

Barak Obama is a weakling who is interested in failed liberal policies, not governing, or even defending the country he swore an oath to protect

Vladimir Putin, on the other hand, is a cold, calculating strongman.  Whether you like him or not, he’s a leader, as evidenced by the fact that he’s held onto power for this long.

Being a former KGB guy, Putin knows a thing or two about judging and manipulating people and situations.  If you’ve read my many posts about Bezmenov, you’ll know that the KGB created our left with some exquisite propaganda and brainwashing techniques.  They knew their targets, and predicted their reactions to their efforts, just like Putin can now.   So, when Putin saw the chance to take the Crimea, he took it.  Want to know why he did it?

He could.

That’s it-that’s all of it.  He could do it because he knows, being a cold, calculating former KGB guy (or perhaps just having a grasp of the obvious) that Obama is a weakling, and mentally crippled by liberalism to do a thing to stop him.  And, even if Obama did try something, it would be a weak, half measure, that would fail or be withdrawn at the moment that meaningful resistance emerged.  They knew it in 2009, when they snubbed him in 2009.  They had no respect for him then, and they have even less now, which is why they are moving.  And, the Chinese are backing them, because they can.  The NORKS are shooting off missiles, because they can.  And the Iranians are sending ships off our shore, or are at least saying it-because they can.  Barak Obama isn’t even a paper tiger.  Instead, he’s a transparent weakling, and everyone in the world can see it, except our low-information voters, and the MSM that misinforms them.

How Big Is A $205 Trillion Hole?

Share

That’s $205 followed by 12 zeros. It’s a number so big that the average person can not wrap their mind around it. And, that’s okay. The only thing a person needs to understand about a $205 trillion hole is that there is no way to climb out of it. None!

So, where does this huge number come from? It comes from economist Dr. Lawrence Kotlikoff, as reported here,  using data from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) called the Alternative Fiscal Scenario (AFS), which is described as follows:

This forecast is what CBO actually projects future taxes and spending to be given not just the laws in place, but also how Congress and the Administration have been bending and changing the laws through time. In short, the Alternative Fiscal Scenario (AFS) is what the CBO thinks we’re facing absent a truly dramatic and sustained shift in fiscal policy.

What Kotlikoff did was take that data and calculate the present value of all US debt and liabilities and he came up with $205 trillion. The article explains what that means this way:

Understand, this is not the unfunded liabilities added up in all future years. This is the present value of the unfunded liabilities, discounted to today. This means that the government needs $205 trillion, cash on hand, to invest in the private sector, in order to fund its legal liabilities. This is not the deficit long after we are dead. This is the present value of the deficit long after we are dead. _ (Bold added)

So, from a perspective of present value, our boys and girls in Washington have dug a hole we can never get out of and all they can do is to keep on digging. For what it’s worth, America is not alone in this dilemma. Relatively speaking the EU is in worse shape and Japan even more so. Brazil, Russia, and India are digging their own holes. And, less you think China is primed to take over the world, you may want to read China Fooled the World (But It Cannot Last)I’m reminded of the old refrain: space is a vacuum because the whole world sucks!

Enjoy the ride wwhile it last, my friends. But, prepare for the worst as best you can. What  can’t last, won’t.

Well, that’s what I’m thinking. What are your thoughts?

What Recovery? Part III: Freedom and Innovation to the Rescue?

Share

In Part I of this “What Recovery?” series, we examined the concept of the velocity of money and how it has been declining for over two decades, which explains why most Americans are not experiencing the economic recovery that technically began in 2009. Then, in Part II, we saw how systemically high unemployment is a factor of US companies having to compete with the lower costs in emerging nations and how our Nanny Government’s fiscal policies make the situation even worse.

Today, we are going to see what well-known libertarian writer, Gary North, thinks. He sees all of what we covered in Parts I and II, yet hee sees a positive future. In fact he does not understand the pessimism of the Americans on the political right.

One of the things which I do not understand is the appalling pessimism within the American Right. I realize that a lot of promoters are cashing in on this pessimism. They get rich by preaching that everything is going to hell in a handbasket. Everything is not going to hell in a handbasket. Communism and Fabian socialism went to hell in a handbasket. Keynesianism is going to hell in a handbasket. Liberty isn’t.

What we are seeing is the greatest triumph of free-market ideas in the history of man. I have lived through it, and I am telling you, we have never seen anything like what we are seeing today. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the reversal of socialist economics in China a decade earlier, we have seen the complete failure of the great alternatives institutionally to the free market economy. The only really systematically communist state left in the world is North Korea, and it is visibly the poorest country in Asia.

Around the world, millions of people are entering free markets. China has made the transition from total Communism to energetic mercantilism. China has entered the Keynesian world order. There is a mixture of mercantilism with Keynesianism in the West, so it is not just a Chinese problem. The state-owned enterprises in China are still a burden on the economy, but step-by-step, they will be abandoned. It is already happening.

India has moved from Fabian socialism to something at least resembling a Western economy. There is no question in my mind that this trend is going to continue. India is going to move out of the intellectual orbit of Oxford and Cambridge of the 1930s. It is clearly experiencing massive economic growth. This is not going to be reversed.

{…}

All of the creativity that is found in any nation with ancient traditions, especially geared to mathematics and scholarship, which the elites of both of those societies have possessed for 1,000 years, is going to unleash an enormous number of technological discoveries. There is going to be invention on a massive scale coming out of both of those nations, but my guess is that India will be the major contributor. We can barely imagine the kinds of inventions that will be made available to the world over the next 20 years. When we are talking over the next 50 years, it really is inconceivable.

{…}

The United States and Canada will continue to crank out all kinds of inventions. The educational systems in both countries are better than in most other countries, and this is going to improve dramatically over the next half-century because of the rise of online education. There is going to be an exodus from the public schools in both nations, and this is going to dramatically increase both the productivity and the self-discipline in both Canada and the United States. Canada has a lot of self-discipline already. Asians have been pouring into the country for three decades.

Those trapped in public schools will fare poorly. This will not be the middle class. Digital education will overwhelm the bureaucratic educational systems in both nations.

Because the coming innovations will be primarily intellectual and technological, they will be made available to the whole world. This will make for greater competition, and therefore it is going to make for much greater wealth for the common man, all over the world.

Well, I don’t know why Mr. North is so sure that the Fabians Socialists are a thing of the past. They may be losing ground in India, but they are alive and well in the US, most of North and South America, Europe, the UK, and Australia. But, hey! Freedom, Innovation, and Digital Education….I’m all for that.  So, why am I still a pessimist?

Let me try to explain what I think I learned in this investigation.

Summary and Conclusions on “What Recovery?”

It is said that a rising tide lifts all boats. But, when  the tide is rising slowly somewhere, it will be lowering slowly somewhere else.

The economies of developed countries, like the US, have always been impacted to some degree by emerging economies due to their inherently lower costs of production. The United States survived the rise of all the so-called Asian Tigers. As the cost structures of the emerging nations becomes more like that of the US, the playing field levels. With the new emerging nations, China and India, the impact is going to be far greater than any competition America has seen before and it is going to last much longer. When the playing field does level, it could be at a much lower level for the United States. Here are a few reasons for my pessimistic outlook.

  1. While China and India are becoming more capitalistic, the US is becoming more socialistic. No matter which political party is in control, government spending keeps spiraling higher. The US government will continue to misallocate resources and compete against the private sector for those resources. Every year the Federal government will pass more laws and more regulations that raise the cost of production in the US. US companies will, in their own defense, continue to invest in the more friendly business environments of countries like China and India; thus creating more jobs in those countries instead of in the US.
  2. Prior to the information age, countries like the US could protect their technological innovation advantages for years. Today new technology, be it new products or ways to reduce cost, is almost instantly available to emerging countries like China and India.
  3. The early economic tigers from Asia were countries of small population. It didn’t take long before wage increases and regulations to improve the environments and living and working conditions for their citizens eroded their cost advantage over the US. China and India, however, have huge populations. Together they account for about a third of the world’s population. It will take decades before they erode their cost advantage.
  4. So, for decades US companies will see their profit margins squeezed on one side by the lower cost competition from China and India and on the other side by an ever more intrusive government. US companies will continue to invest in places like China and India out of the necessity to survive. This will have an ongoing negative effect on job creation in the US. As the middle class in China and India see their standard of living improving, those in the US will see their standard of living decreasing. When or if the playing field does level, it will be because the US economy has declined toward the rising economies of China and India. The question is: Will China and India continue to become more capitalistic while the US continues to become more socialistic? If that happens, China and India will continue to rise and the US will continue its decline.

Those are the opinions of your humble but pessimistic observer at Asylum Watch. He would be delighted to be convinced by sound arguments that America’s future is not so gloomy.

Well, now you know what I’m thinking. What are your thoughts?

Obama the Out-sourcer in Chief? GM Claims that it’s Future in in China

Share

During this campaign, much has been made of Bain Capital outsourcing jobs to other countries.  But, what of President Obama, especially his takeover of “government motors?”  This video says much…

Sadly, the management at GM is taking advantage of an expanding Chinese market, and, they are probably trying to escape union goons.  But, Obama set all of this up.  A usual, someone else will be blamed, and if anything is proposed, it will be a punishment against those that try to stay in business.  Perhaps they’ll build a wall, to keep anyone from escaping?

Stupid is as Stupid Does:Three Stories

Share

With all that is going on in America and in the world that has impact our lives and the futures of our children, it is not surprising that a lot of news passes under the radar, sort of speak. Sometimes I have to wonder if there is a conspiracy within the MSM to keep some news under the radar because they don’t want the world to know just how outrageously stupid Americans can be at times.

We have come to expect people in government to do stupid things. In fact that is the norm and it is not just an American phenomena. Two of today’s stories have to do with government. But, we generally tend to think that the people in charge of major corporations would likely be very smart people. The first story today will prove that this theory doesn’t always hold up.

China Dupes General Motors Again

From a recent American Thinker article we learn

It’s  déjà vu all over again!  GM again caves to Chinese pressure.  In  September it was the electric car.  In April it was the  Cadillac.

Allow me to explain what is going on. To do business in China, like many socialist countries, a foreign company like General Motors must have a cinese partner. In this case, the Chinese partner is a company that goes by the accrmym of SAIC. But, not only does GM have to take on a Chinese partner, they are required by the Chinese government to share all of their technology with the partner. And, what does SAIC do with that shared technology? Well, they go off and build a wholly owned factory of their own and produce a clone to compete directly with General Motors.

Can somebody explain to me how this is good business for General Motors? I ask that question because here is what is going to happen. In exchange for some short-term profits (maybe), GM is going to give up its technology and eventually they are going to lose their market share to SAIC’s other company and SAIC will probably end up the proud 100% owner of the factory that GM built with its capital. I have to wonder if GM’s US partner, the US Government, has had a hand in these decisions. Whatever, it looks pretty stupid to me.

Abuse of Government Freebies

Here is a government freeby program that I had no idea it existed. Bid you know that the FCC  (I tried without success to find out when this program started) has a program called Lifeline for low-income folks to have phone service? Bruce McQuain at Questions and Observation has this story. The FCC Lifeline program was originally to provide low-income people with landline phone service in case there were emergencies that needed to be reported. Later on the program was extended to provide free cell phones and even free smart phones. Here is a quote from Arkansas’ Republican Congressman Tim Griffin

“People are not only getting [one free cell phone], they’re getting multiples. There are reports of people getting 10, 20, 30 — just routinely getting more than one, selling them, storing them up, whatever,” Griffin said

This freeby program is costing taxpayer about $1 billion per year.  You see, although government people are stupid , poor people are not so stupid. These phones come with 100 minutes or more of free use. So, what happens? A poor person goes to a participating store and they get their free smart phone. Then they go to another and another participating store and get more phones. They use up their free minutes and sell the phones and start the process al over again. So, Mr. McQuain has a question for you

…Ever wonder what that line on your bill that says “universal service fund” was all about?  Well, this is what it’s about.  Your government giving away cell phones with no apparent accountability and you paying for them.

Yup! We always pay for government stupidity, don’t we?

A Nanny Never Sleeps

I swear these people stay up nights divining problems that government must solve by creating another law. This low flying news also comes to us thanks to Bruce McQuain at Questions and Observations.  The Nanny in question is a  Kathy Webb, a state Representative from Arkansas. She thinks frying hamburgers is dangerous to the environment.

Webb has submitted Interim Study Proposal 2011-201, an act “to declare an emergency” over the alleged crisis. Frying hamburgers is now The People’s Business of the Highest Order.

Webb’s bill claims food grease presents an emergency risk of sewer overflows that threatens the environment. “It is in the public interest to establish a Fat, Oil, and Grease Advisory Committee to study the recommended measures to better ensure that the collection, transportation, disposal, and recycling of fat, oil, and grease are done in a manner that is protective of the environment,” reads the bill.

And, there is more

According to the bill, the state will appoint a 14 (!) member committee “with adequate staff and facilities” to study the frying-pan-grease emergency and recommend legislation, enforcement, and other emergency government action to fight food grease. Even after such action, the committee and its “adequate staff and facilities” will perpetually exist, convene, and soak up taxpayer resources.

Bruce has a response that is much better than anything I could come up with

Because that’s what government does.  It appoints “Grease Czars”, enthrones them in perpetuity “with adequate staff and facilities” and then wastes taxpayer money trying to enforce unenforceable laws passed by morons.

Yeah, stupid is as stupid does. Stupid is a commodity that we never seem to run short of.

Well, that’s what I’m thinking. What are your thoughts?

Leon Panetta Claims Global Warming Is Now A National Security Threat

While the Russian bear threatens to preemptively blow the bejesus out of NATO’s European missile defense shield, while the Chinese People’s Liberation Army is building upfaster than an Olympian on steroids, when looming budget cuts, automatic sequestration, and the scrapping of most of our nuclear arsenal by Barack Obama foreshadows the impending transformation of the once mighty U.S. military into a dessicated husk, the loyal Democratic Party hack, ex-CIA head, and Secretary of the Soon-To-Be-Defenseless has placed the theories of the ever delusional Al Gore and the radical environmentalist lobby at the forefront of his concerns.

Panetta’s remarks should come as no surprise.  After all, this is an administration that considers anyone to the right of Karl Marx as an enemy of the state.  It’s no wonder that sooner or later, the minions of the Big Red One would include global warming deniers as potential threats to national security, along with veterans, tax protesters, Catholics, and conservative Republicans.

Meanwhile, our indomitable Secretary of State, Hillary the Fey, roams the Far East, having successfully concluded yet another Obama triumph — convincing the rulers of the Middle Kingdom to join the Global Alliance For Clean Cookstoves.

All of us should be convinced by now that the real threats to national security are residing in the White House.

Obama Kills Keystone XL Pipeline, Tens of Thousands of Jobs, and Throws Unions Under the Bus

Share

Talk about a trifecta!  The President, once again, has taken the opportunity to deny the permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline.  For those of you that are unaware, the pipeline would go from Canada, to US refineries, giving us an influx of affordable source of energy.  That, and we’d be buying it from an good, decent people that make pretty decent beer, and, as a plus, have no desire to kill us.  Estimates vary, but the uppermost guesses indicate that hundreds of thousands of jobs could be eventually be created.  These would be private sector jobs, that would impact many communities.  However, Obama is denying permission for it to happen.  For more, here is some excerpts from Redstate…

According to a State Department release [emphasis added]:

Today, the Department of State recommended to President Obama that the presidential permit for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline be denied and, that at this time, the TransCanada Keystone XL Pipeline be determined not to serve the national interest. The President concurred with the Department’s recommendation, which was predicated on the fact that the Department does not have sufficient time to obtain the information necessary to assess whether the project, in its current state, is in the national interest.

Since 2008, the Department has been conducting a transparent, thorough, and rigorous review of TransCanada’s permit application for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline project…

For more than three years, the State Department has conducted its “transparent, thorough, and rigorous review.” However, apparently, the Obama Administration believes that three years wasn’t enough to be transparent, thorough, or rigorous enough.

As Forbes’ Christopher Helman noted in November:

In the process of selecting the proposed route, TransCanada plotted and studied 14 different pipeline paths and submitted 10,000 pages of environmental studies. They’ve already studied this thing to death.

In other words, feet have been drug for so long now, that the feet are gone, and the contact point is just below the kneecaps!

This should be a shining accomplishment for Obama.  It has the potential to bring down energy prices, create a ton of jobs, and make his union friends happy.  Considering his record, and that this is an election year, he should be rushing to sign his approval, right?  Wrong!  It would appear that Obama is continuing on his path to make our nation weaker, keep more people out of work, and therefore, dependent on government assistance-even if it jeopardizes his re-election.

In fact, he has gone as far as to earn the scorn of some union bosses.

From the same RedState article…

As a result of the Obama’s job-destroying decision, Laborers’ union president, Terry O’Sullivan issued a blistering statement:

The score is Job-Killers, two; American workers, zero. We are completely and totally disappointed. This is politics at its worst,” LIUNA General President Terry O’Sullivan said. “Once again the President has sided with environmentalists instead of blue collar construction workers – even though environmental concerns were more than adequately addressed.Blue collar construction workers across the U.S. will not forget this.”

The project would create thousands of good jobs at a time when unemployment in the construction industry is 16 percent with 1.3 million men and women jobless.

Environmental groups have used the Keystone XL as a disingenuous proxy for arguments about global warming. The pipeline would carry up to 900,000 barrels of oil a day from Canada’s Tar Sands to the U.S., reducing reliance on oil from hostile nations. While environmental groups decry Tar Sands development, the Canadian government and Trans-Canada, the company developing the Tar Sands, have made clear the oil will be developed – and possibly sold to China – regardless of whether Keystone XL is built.

So, will this be a wakeup call to union bosses?  Will they realize that they are being used as useful idiots?  Probably not, but their lack of realization doesn’t make it any less true.  The average worker, union of not, should realize from this that they are disposable, not only to their bosses, but to Obama as well.

Also, that the ChiComs are the potential benefactor from Obama’s decision should raise some eyebrows, but the MSM won’t be investigating that any time soon.

Same old ChiComs: Blogger Jailed for Criticizing Regime, Social Networks Lose Anonymity

Share

So, it seems that it still a pretty bad idea to criticize the ChiComs via a blog…

Turns out China is a tyranny where criticism of the government can result in aprison sentence:

A Chinese court has handed down a 10-year jail sentence to Chen Xi, the second dissident in four days to be convicted of inciting subversion through online essays…

The intermediate people’s court in Guiyang, in south-west China’s Guizhou region, tried Chen Xi, 57, on charges linked to more than 30 political essays he published online.

“The judge said this was a major crime that had a malign impact,” his wife, Zhang Qunxuan, told Reuters by phone after the trial. The judge said Chen was a repeat offender who deserved a long sentence, she added.

If you hit the link, and go over to Verum Serum, you’ll get the details on how Chinese citizens joining social networks, like Twitter, must now give their full name when registering.

If you recall, our own regressives wanted to make all campaign donations public.  You know, with everyone’s name and personal information for all to see, so they could be harassed by regressive minions.  I covered the (failed) Disclose Act this past February, illustrating what had happened when people had disagreed with the tolerant and diverse regressives, and those same regressives found out where they lived…

That just oozes “tolerance” and “diversity,” doesn’t it?  Then again, the gay rights crowd used campaign contribution regs to find out who contributed to Prop 8, and created a map to their homes.

And the results of that?

More to the point, what Eightmaps intends to accomplish happened to me and my famly last year. And it was terrifying. Here’s the story:

Someone got my address from publicly available sources, made a malicious flyer with that information on it, went to the city’s homeless shelters and passed it around (the police told me that someone on staff at a shelter told them he saw a stranger distributing the flyers). The flyer told the homeless that if they came to my house, we’d give them money. This person did not care that it was summer, and he was tricking the poorest of the poor to a four-mile walk from the downtown shelters to my house. All he cared about was striking out at me.

We knew something was up after the second rough-looking person showed up demanding money, and got angry when he was told we had no idea what he was talking about. (All this happened when I was at work; imagine your wife opening the door to confront a homeless man who has just learned from her that he’d walked all that way in the heat for no reason). But we could tell they had some sort of flyer with our address on it. We called the police, who advised us to stall the next person who showed up, then call them on 911. That we did. Julie phoned me at work one day to say a scary-looking guy was at the front door with one of the flyers, and that she’d just called 911.

By the time I got home, the police were there questioning this guy, who looked like he’d wondered what the heck he’d gotten into. The cops said that this guy meant no harm, that he’d been the victim of this prankster just as we had. They also said he was a registered sex offender.

But wait…there’s more.

Harassment, Hostility, and Slurs

Several individuals who supported Proposition 8 reported receiving harassing telephone calls, e-mails, and mailings. Prop 8 supporters have reported receiving phone calls and voice mails calling them “bigot”[34] and using vulgar language.[35] Sometimes harassers called at work.[36] A public relations firm hired by the Yes on 8 Campaign received so many harassing phone calls from one person that the sheriff’s office became involved.[37] Other Prop 8 supporters received e-mails, letters, and postcards using vulgar language[38] and offensive labels like “gay hater.”[39] Through the contact form on his business’s Web site, one individual received an e-mail stating “burn in hell.”[40] One e-mail threatened to contact the parents of students at a school where a particular Prop 8 supporter worked.[41]

Harassment sometimes took other forms. For example, two women painted an arrow and the words “Bigots live here” on the window of an SUV and parked the vehicle in front of a household that had supported Prop 8.[42] In another case, an individual who supported Prop 8 found himself the subject of a flyer distributed in his town. The flyer included a photo of him, labeled him a “Bigot,” and stated his name, the amount of his donation to Prop 8, and his association with a particular Catholic Church.[43] At the University of California, Davis, a Yes on 8 table on the quad was reportedly attacked by a group of students throwing water balloons and shouting “you teach hate.”[44] A professor at Los Angeles City College allegedly told students in his class, “If you voted yes on Proposition 8, you are a fascist [expletive deleted].”[45] One Prop 8 supporter received a book, sent anonymously through Amazon.com, that contained “the greatest homosexual love stories of all time.”[46]

In a sense, even the ChiComs are playing catch-up to our regressives.  Removing anonymity is a means to subject people to punishment when they offer opinions that run counter to the government, or their ideological allies.  Therefore, we shouldn’t be surprised when statists of any stripe propose means to identify, and target, political opponents.

Chinese Uprising and OWS: Freedom vs. Slavery

Share

In the event you haven’t heard, a Chinese town of  20,000, Wukan, is in open rebellion against the ChiComs, throwing out the local Communist officials.  Here is more from The Other McCain…

Malcolm Moore reports from Wukan, China:

For the first time on record, the Chinese Communist party has lost all control, with the population of 20,000 in this southern fishing village now in open revolt.
The last of Wukan’s dozen party officials fled on Monday after thousands of people blocked armed police from retaking the village, standing firm against tear gas and water cannons.
Since then, the police have retreated to a roadblock, some three miles away, in order to prevent food and water from entering, and villagers from leaving. Wukan’s fishing fleet, its main source of income, has also been stopped from leaving harbour.
The plan appears to be to lay siege to Wukan and choke a rebellion which began three months ago when an angry mob, incensed at having the village’s land sold off, rampaged through the streets and overturned cars.
Although China suffers an estimated 180,000 “mass incidents” a year, it is unheard of for the Party to sound a retreat. . . .

These are clearly some brave people, and they are literally risking their lives in this rebellion.  The ChiComs may not be quite as murderous as they were under Mao, but they are still a totalitarian regime.  Needless to say, our hope and prayers ought to go out to these people.  They’re going to need all of the help that they can get.  Hopefully, they all don’t “disappear” (and our homegrown Communists boldly state that they never existed).

I’m thinking that eventually, someone is going to compare this to OWS.  More likely than not, they are going to say something to the effect that these people are somehow resisting capitalism.  Also, it reminds me of a recent exchange I had with our friend, The Classic Liberal.  We had a disagreement regarding my take on the Occupy Berkeley Pepper Spray Incident.  Here is that exchange…

I must vehemently disagree with you here.

Look, I find the OWS movement mostly wrong, ideologically confused, and incredibly uninteresting. But whatever it is they are or aren’t, doesn’t matter in this instance.

Not long ago, the British colonists of North America had run-ins with British soldiers as they protested rights violations, regulations and taxes that were insignificant to what we deal with now. The soldiers resorted often to violence. The North American Brits counted these among a long train of abuses …

British soldiers traveled across the vast ocean and risked their lives protecting the colonists from the Indians and French. Yet the colonists hated them, seeing them as occupiers, not protectors. A group our government today would considered a terrorist network, the Sons of Liberty, burned Andrew Oliver (a public official) in effigy before burning some of his property and raiding his house too. They created a small, but angry mob. The sheriffs were afraid for their lives that night and wouldn’t mess with them. The Sons of Liberty were also known to literally tar and feather tax collectors and bailiffs. They went after Tories (government loyalists) too, and worked aggressively to subvert and overthrow the government.

The original Tea Party was was a felony act of vandalism and theft. The Declaration of Independence was in fact a declaration of war. All of the above (and then some) were bold acts of treason.

Are you starting to get my point?

The cops in that video look more like soldiers than peace officers. Pepper-spraying those kids was neither defensive nor proportional (Christian doctrine). Those cops were no better than those “liberating” British soldiers in the colonies whom against those ungrateful colonists waged war.

The left/right argument is so 1960?s, and incredibly meaningless. OWS will soon fade out of existence*. It’s time to ask yourself whether you are a patriot (Sons of Liberty), or a Tory (state apologist)?

*Once caveat is that societal breakdown is nearing as a consequence of an ever more intrusive and violent police state. If the state overreacts (as they usually do), OWS will grow instead of fade, and we’ll have a repeat of the French revolution on our hands.

Here is my response…

I think we are looking at OWS in radically different ways. My point is that this is an excellent opportunity to examine the hard left in unmasked action. We’ve seen the religious hate, the violence, the vandalism, and the calls for revolution and Communism. Yes, they have the large numbers of drugged hippies, who have no idea what or whom they are serving. We also have the violent elements, and the leadership, who are already in control (and marginalizing the more clueless elements). For the most part, this is nothing new-it’s simply being put into practice on a larger scale, and therefore bears examining, and exposing.

We also differ in that I’m looking at the end goals of the movement. You draw comparisons to behavior. Those cannot be argued, as they are factual. However, what are the end goals of that behavior? We know what the occupods want-they have told us. Also, we know where their support is. They want to take what they perceive to be the threat to freedom- the corporations, and control them with an all powerful state. Many of the followers have no idea where that will lead. We do-history teaches us where a powerful government leads.

On the contrary, our government, as envisioned, is a historical aberration. There were mobs, there were “criminal” acts, and intellectuals, and “rich” people were the heads of the movement. At almost any other point in history, such a revolution would have lead to a tyrannical state. Instead, Washington turned in his sword, and went home. Those rich intellectuals, rather than acting in their own interest, helped craft a system of government that placed the emphasis on the individual, and his rights, rather than on the power of government. Contrast that with where OWS is going. Will that revolution result in more human freedom, or would it lead to a bloody, tyrannical regime? Again, history is a teacher, and that is a cause for alarm.

In the end, behavior is a tool. It’s the end that we have to look at. I can use a hammer to build something for myself, or for others, or I can build gallows, a guillotine, and a Gulag. It’s not just the behaviors, it’s the motivations behind them.

I also look at the historical parallels to other protest movements. We have seen that leftist protesters have a history of staging events to garner public support. I’ve covered that here a good bit. From putting elderly and toddlers on the “front lines,” to provoking reactions from the police, they have been trying rather hard to stage another “Kent State.” It’s fake and contrived, but they have done it before, and it’s a safe bet that they will do it again.

My point is rather simple; civil disobedience is a tool.  Yes, we can get stuck on behavior, but our eyes, ears, and brains need to be looking at the reasons for the behavior, as well as the stated goals of the people engaging in that behavior.  From what we can tell (because the ChiComs aren’t exactly letting the citizens communicate with the outside world very much), the Chinese townspeople  are upset that their government took their land from them, and are giving it to a developer.  That would, if true, certainly qualify as crony capitalism.  As a result, the villagers have kicked out their actual aggressors-the Communist Party officials that made the deal.

Let’s contrast that with OWS.  The townspeople, again, went after the government officials that took their land, and gave it to someone else.  OWS wants to empower government to take from others, and give to THEM.   That, and the government, with more power to tax and confiscate, will abuse more and more people in the process.  Similar behaviors are visible, but the goals are nearly diametrically opposed.  Again, it’s easy to look at behavior and become alarmed.  However, I will be persistent in looking at the motivations of the behavior, because that will always tell you whether something is truly dangerous.

ObamCare Damage: Medical Device Manufacturer to cut 1400 Jobs

Share

It’s been a while since I wrote anything on ObamaCare Damage, but the reports keep trickling in.  If you recall, there is a tax on medical devises in ObamaCare, basically making granny’s pacemaker more expensive.  We’re now seeing more concrete evidence of the predictable results of such a tax. Kindly take a look at this, from The Boston Globe, via Hot Air.

Boston Scientific Corp. said yesterday that it plans to eliminate 1,200 to 1,400 jobs worldwide during the next 2 1/2 years to free money for new investments, the Natick medical device maker’s second major round of cuts since last year.

The company would not say how many jobs will be lost in Massachusetts, where fewer than 2,000 of its 25,000 employees are based. In February 2010, Boston Scientific said it would pare 1,300 jobs worldwide, but similarly did not say where.

Yesterday’s move, a day after Boston Scientific disclosed it was investing $150 million and hiring 1,000 people in China, raised fears that the company will gradually shift more work to foreign sites with less government oversight and lower costs than the United States.

And the response for our regressive legislators??

Massachusetts state Senator James Elridge (D-Acton) reacted … predictably:

“My sense is, sadly, that like many other American companies, they are shedding jobs in Massachusetts and adding jobs overseas,’’ Eldridge said. “And this is a company making greater profits, so it’s even more outrageous.’’

This is yet another example of the bass ackwards thinking of our regressives.  Instead of looking at the reality of the tax causing jobs to go “poof,” they knee-jerk into the same old tired class warfare arguments.  Instead of saying, “gee, when we make the cost of doing business higher, business’s go away,” they attack the businesses.  That, my friends, is comparable to blaming the earthquake victim for the earthquake itself.

And, it isn’t like we weren’t warned…

More than 420 companies including Boston Scientific, St. Jude Medical and Stryker signed on to a letter asking the U.S. Congress to repeal a planned 2.3 percent excise tax on medical devices. The tax could cost $20 billion a year and is set to take effect in 2013 as part of broad health care reform package passed last year.

“The tax is already having an adverse impact on R&D investment and job creation, jeopardizing the U.S. global leadership position in medical device innovation,” said the letter.

“If this tax is not repealed, it will continue to force affected companies to consider cutting manufacturing operations, research and development, and employment levels to recoup the lost earnings due to the tax,” it said. “It will also adversely impact patient access to new and innovative medical technologies,” it added.

“The medical device excise tax is a serious burden for companies struggling to maintain America’s global leadership in the development of medical technology,” said Stephen J. Ubl, president and CEO of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), a medtech lobbying group that drafted the letter.

But, our regressives would much rather play the class warfare game than see how their policies make products more expensive, or make jobs go away.

Something tells me that this is just the tip of the iceberg.
