Obama promised that he would put coal fired power plants out of business.  Obama promised that his policies would make make electric bills “skyrocket.”  As we face potential energy shortages and even possible brownouts/blackouts due to Obama’s policies, coal miners are looking forward to a bleak future as well.  Here is video of a miner making a rather humble and heartfelt comment a a public hearing.

When Obama kills the industry that uses much of the coal mined, it puts the coal miners in a precarious position. But, of course, the Obama administration doesn’t care a bit about the miners, other than the fact that it drives more and more of them into dependency on the government.  I do have to ask some questions though…

Did the United Mine Workers Union endorse Obama?

Did the United Mine Workers give campaign dollars to the democrats that support Obama’s job killing policies?

And now, they’re going to take Obama to task for doing what he promised to do in the first place?

And, come to think of it, why does Obama only keep promises that wreck people’s lives?

I know, the typical leftist, having no facts in his or her arsenal, will resort to insults, but in the meantime, they’ll put this man out of work, impoverish his family, and blame it on someone else-probably Bush.

And the sheeple will bleat compliantly.

I can only hope that more and more people wake up to this, but previous experience tells me that it’s wishful thinking.

Since his promise in 2008 Barack Obama has had it in for the coal industry in America. Let’s revisit what he said back then.

From a January 2008 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board

Yep, he said it. His goal is to bankrupt any business that relies on coal.

If somebody wants to build a coal-fired power plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them,” Obama said, responding to a question about his cap-and-trade plan. He later added, “Under my plan … electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

So fast forward to the present day and he is still at it.

On Monday, Obama plans to announce his decision to use his executive power to cut carbon emissions by up to 20 percent, a move that would be “the strongest action ever taken by an American president to tackle climate change,” The New York Times reports.

The initiative would allow states to use cap-and-trade systems, which let companies emitting pollutants buy and sell greenhouse gas emission allowances. A cap is set on the total number of permits to dispense carbon emissions. Companies that emit larger amounts of greenhouse gases can buy additional permits from companies that don’t need to emit as many.

Republican Senator Mike Enzi from Wyoming is having none of it.

Senator Mike Enzi R WY

President Barack Obama has “set out to kill coal” with his plans for cutting carbon emissions regulations like his proposed national energy tax, Sen. Mike Enzi said Saturday.

“We all want clean air and clean water,” Wyoming’s Enzi said in this week’s GOP address. “We don’t want costly regulations that make little or no difference, that are making things less affordable. Republicans want electricity and gas when you need it, at a price you can afford.”

“The Administration has set out to kill coal and its 800,000 jobs,” said Enzi of Obama’s plan. “if it succeeds in death by regulation, we’ll all be paying a lot more money for electricity – if we can get it. Our pocketbook will be lighter, but our country will be darker. ”

In addition to backing such stringent rules, the Obama administration “slow walks approval of oil and gas production,” Enzi said. “It’s death by delay for the Keystone XL pipeline.”

And it isn’t just Obama’s war on coal that bothers Enzi. He is also upset at an administration plan to lower student loan debt for “a few” college grads.

Enzi on Saturday also took issue with an administration plan to help reduce student loan debt for “a few” college graduates.

“The left is masterful at buying votes with other people’s money, but knocking a few dollars off the average monthly college loan payment does not make up for the policies they have enacted that make it harder for businesses to create jobs and Americans to make a living,” said Enzi.

“There are better ways to help graduates and other Americans who want a better life,” he continued. “We need to rapidly expand the job market.”

Republican proposals help employers create jobs and students get a good education, but the Democrats’ student loan plan does not make college affordable, doesn’t reduce how much students have to borrow, or do anything about lack of jobs graduates face, said Enzi.

“The proposal would increase the federal debt [at $17 trillion] by $400 billion more,” said Enzi. “The only way to claim it wouldn’t is to use more phony accounting.”

“The proposal would also set a dangerous precedent by making private debt into public debt, not to mention that it would enact a job-destroying tax that the Senate’s already rejected,” said Enzi.

Republicans have also introduced bills to help more high school students attend colleges of their choice, while creating jobs, pointed out Enzi.

Enzi hit on an absolute truth about government involvement into any issue – and that is, the more government you have the higher the costs are.

The more involved the federal government becomes in something, the more it seems to cost,” said Enzi, also pointing out the problems with Obamacare.

“In the early days of selling his health care plan, the President said it was going to bring health care prices down,” said Enzi. “I warned then that we would see massive increases in not only what patients pay, but also what the federal government has to pay.”

But premiums are climbing as the Internal Revenue Service prepares to collect heavy taxes.

“There are better ways to ensure more people have improved, affordable healthcare,” said Enzi, noting he wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it with “commonsense, patient-centered reforms.”

“America was built on citizens having the freedom to make choices that best fit them as individuals,” said Enzi. “That’s what Republican education, Republican health care, and other proposals do.”

Is Obama Going to End Coal?

Share

Is Obama going to end the use of coal?  It’s very possible, if you take a look at the following, from the Independent Sentinel…

Obama is at war with fossil fuels and his first key battle is against coal, which provides 45% of the electricity in the United States. Obama has succeeded at making it impossible to build new coal plants and he is about to close existing plants.

Last year the EPA passed stringent carbon emissions standards on coal plants that prevented the building of any new coal-fired facilities in the United States. Some of the worst rules, delayed until this year, will increase standards on existing plants so that they are deliberately unattainable – the goal is to close existing plants.

Many existing plants will have no choice but to shut down as opposed to upgrading quickly because they won’t be able to make a profit. If they attempt to meet the standards, the EPA will only continue to throw more rules at them.

I recall the intent of the last paragraph well.  I grew up in SW PA, so the news came from Pittsburgh.  In the Summer, on hot, humid days, we had “Ozone Action Days,” when to prevent Ozone creation, people were advised to cut back on cutting grass, and other terrible polluting activities.  Of course, as time wore on, there were  less and less Ozone Action Days. So then, to make the Ozone Action Days relevant, the standard for calling those events were  lowered, so there would be more Ozone Action Days.  The same thing will happen here with coal.  Even if some coal fired plants meet the initial regulations, the EPA would keep changing the regs until all of them succumbed.  Where does that leave us?  President Obama said what he wanted…

For once , it appears that Obama made a promise he’s actually trying to keep.

Obama’s Second Term EPA to Destroy Coal Industry

Share

Apparently, the Obama Administration is holding back on announcing new regulations, especially from the EPA.  It would seem that the Administration does not want prospective voters knowing what the EPA will be up to.  However, Freedom Works has some relevant information…

First, an October report from Republican Sen. James Inhofe indicated that the EPA specifically “punted” on numerous regulations in an attempt to “earn votes” for a second term.

Then, the administration illegally failed to meet a deadline for releasing regulatory plans for the coming year, a move which prompted Inhofe to release the following statement:

“President Obama is refusing to comply with the law that requires him to publish forthcoming regulations because he doesn’t want the American public to know the terrible cost of the regulatory barrage he plans to unleash in a second term.”

The actual cutback in October regulations and subsequent plans in November bear this out.  We’ve seen an unprecedented number of ‘economically significant’ regulations being approved by the Obama administration last month.  Reports indicate that there were only 4 regulations approved during October, while Obama has averaged over 40 such regulations on average over his term.

Inhofe warns that 2013 will be much different – wide-sweeping regulations will be coming from the White House … after the election.  And it won’t be a pretty scene for the jobs scene in coal country:

The Oklahoma senator and ranking Republican on the chamber’s Committee on Environment and Public Works has released a report stating that when the agency approves the roughly one dozen regulations next year in 2013, they will “spell doom” for jobs and economic growth… ‘These rules taken together will inevitably result in the elimination of millions of American jobs, drive up the price of gas at the pump even more, impose construction bans on local communities and essentially shut down American oil, natural gas and coal production.’”

New EPA regulations will facilitate the closing of up to 69,000 megawatts of coal-fueled electric generation, and will sever up to 887,000 jobs per year. Worse according to the report, peak years could see job losses anywhere between 700,000 and a staggering 2.2 million.

That’s what Obama promised.  He promised to bankrupt coal, and the new regulations, that won’t be released unless/until Obama wins will do exactly that.  But, how many people working in the emergy/coal sector will go out and vote for the man who will put them out of work?

It’s Not Easy Being Green: Green Cars Cause More Pollution!

Share

When it comes to green cars, I feel obligated to invoke Quinn’s First Law…

“Liberalism always generates the exact opposite of it’s stated intent.”

You can’t argue it.  The “war on poverty” caused more poverty.  Since the onset of the Department of Education, education has gotten worse.  I could go on all day, but you get the point.  Liberals state that they are going to make something better, and instead make it worse.  Then, they blame us for their failure.  Here is the latest; green cars cause more pollution!  The Lonely Conservative has more…

The Daily Caller reported that a new study by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology found that “green” electric cars are worse for the environment than traditional automobiles that run on gasoline or diesel. I don’t even think they took into account what happens when electric cars catch on fire.

Specifically, the study found that electric car factories can emit more toxic waste than gas-burning car factories. And greenhouse gas emissions rise exponentially if coal is used to produce the electricity necessary to charge “green” vehicles, according to the study.

The researchers compared the overall life-cycle impact of petrol or diesel-powered cars and electric vehicles and concluded that the latter can significantly damage the climate.

“The global warming potential from electric vehicle production is about twice that of conventional vehicles,” the report said. “It is counterproductive to promote electric vehicles in regions where electricity is primarily produced from lignite, coal or even heavy oil combustion.” (Read More)

Now, I’m sure that some Obamabot could come by and mention that Obama’s killing the coal industry, just like he promised…Oh wait, they aren’t going to admit that, especially so close to the election.  I wonder how they can argue this one then?

Mine Union Boss Suddenly Realizes that Obama Wants to Kill Coal: Amazement Ensues

Share

Conservatives have known that Obama has it in for all things coal.  We know this because he’s said so-no prophesy or divination required! However, it seems that quite a few people didn’t pay attention to what candidate Obama was saying.  Case in point, Cecil Roberts, boss of bosses of the United Mine Workers.  Apparently, Cecil just now realized that Obama is going to put a lot of his “constituents” out of work…

The coal industry will suffer the same fate as Osama bin Laden under new climate regulations proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency, the head of the United Mine Workers of America said this week.

“The Navy SEALs shot Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan and Lisa Jackson shot us in Washington,” Cecil Roberts, president of the powerful union, said during an interview Tuesday on the West Virginia radio show MetroNews Talkline.

Roberts blasted Jackson, the EPA administrator, over the proposed regulations, which would limit greenhouse gas emissions from new power plants. Opponents of the regulations, including Roberts, say the new rules would be the death knell of the coal industry.

New coal-fired power plants would have to install technology to capture carbon dioxide emissions in order to comply with the rules. The technology, known as carbon capture and storage (CCS), “is not commercially available,” Roberts said.

“This rule is an all-out, in my opinion, decision by the EPA that we’re never going to have another coal-fired facility in the United States that’s constructed,” Roberts said.

Er, Cecil, Obama said he would do this in 2008.

Yes, that’s a short clip, but for the purposes of this post, it will suffice.  Longer versions are available on YouTube.

At any rate, welcome to what we like to call reality, Cecil.  It’s usually a shock to suddenly realize that socialists do eat their own, and the workers you represent are now on the menu.  But Cecil, did your union give millions to Obama in 2008, and after learning this, will the union fund more of their own demise this year?  The choice is yours, but I really don’t think you want to sell out the rank and file, and then have them find out about it, do you?

Latest EPA Rules to Cost 1.4 Million Jobs and a 12% Increase in Utility Bills

Share

The good thing about having a record is being able to run on it, and I have a track record of posts on my blog that make Obama pretty jealous. In November of 2008 I pointed to an interview that Obama gave where he said that as part of his ‘green energy’ policies he intended to use the power of the federal government to bankrupt all coal producers in the United States. As I quite accurately wrote:

Obama is telling anyone that uses any energy at all that he intends to drive up the price of it. Combine this with his anti-drilling stances for oil, and get used to an economy that is starved for energy- high inflation, low growth, unemployment, and bad times.

This recession is not ‘Bush’s fault’- it is the result of government policies that Obama put in place that have led to a rise in prices for energy, and when it becomes more expensive to produce energy, the result is as predicted. As I wrote in Democrats Energy Policies Continue their Assault on Wealth and Jobs:

Our economy is struggling for a reason- Democrats and their policies are crushing human liberty and freedom, attacking wealth and wealth creation, freezing in social and economic structures, limiting mobility and change, and disincentivizing economic growth. Their policies are quite clear- these energy policies are a great example of how Democrats are increasing ‘safety’ or ‘environmental’ regulations that will drive US companies under, kill jobs, and drive business to other nations which have lower standards (thereby causing more harm to people or the environment), resulting in a net loss for society and America. Similar policies are found in healthcare, defense, education, etc.

This is not just fun and games people- these are real policies being put in place by real people that are having real job-killing and wealth-destroying effects. Democrats might want to run next election by churning out negative attacks and finding the one bad thing that their opponent did in the past, but that’s just a side-show to distract you from the real results of their policies.

And the energy policies of the Democrats in the House, Senate, and Presidency are bad policies. They are not resulting in any sort of ‘safer’ environment. The man-made caused global warming that was going to destroy the world in the near future has been proven to be an utter myth promoted by corrupt scientists and ‘green energy’ producers who both live on kick-backs from the government. And it appears that under Obama and the Democrats administration, oil spills and mining disasters are getting more common and having worse effects. This isn’t a shock- being safe is more about kicking back money to the right people now and much less about everyone following the law. And there attempts to kill coal production and mining in the United States just means that an unsupervised and unregulated communist China will produce and mine for more coal, doing far more damage to the environment than if it was done in the United States.

And the negatives of the energy policies of the Democrats in the House, Senate, and Presidency are becoming more obvious. The latest example of their bad policies is the latest rules that the EPA has put out on ‘pollution’ and energy production. These rules are draconian in nature and by design are supposed to be as unfriendly to energy and business as possible- the exact opposite of flexible and smart policies that allow businesses to thrive in a creative and business-friendly environment.

These new EPA rules are designed to choke job creation, especially in rural areas and states that produce coal, but these states don’t vote Democrat and don’t give the Democrats lots of wealth, so they think it is okay to hammer those states and punish them for their sense of liberty and freedom and equality.

These new EPA policies are also designed to ensure that consumers are stricken with higher utility bills. Oh, your Al Gores and John Kerry’s and John Edwards and Barack Obama’s will be able to pay those higher utility bills, but the middle class will be hard hit by these policies and driven into poverty and become a serf to the government system.

Coal plants will soon be forced to install new scrubber equipment that provides marginal improvement in air quality at tremendous expense. Producers of this new scrubber equipment will benefit and thousands of unionized bureaucrats who will be hired to ensure that these new standards are met will benefit, but the quality of air will see little improvement and the costs associated with installing and running these new energy-eating scrubbers will be passed on to consumers in the form of higher costs, or the company will absorb the costs by delaying investments in improvements in technology or safety, or the company will be forced to become more efficient by laying off many workers and employing more automation (they’ll also save money by laying off workers because they won’t have to pay the ever increasing costs of employing people that Obama and the Democrats are piling on). Or the company will go out of business.

The Washington Post reports that electric bills will jump 12 percent nationally by 2016 to comply with these new policies that the Democrats are putting in place, with residents in areas such as Kentucky and Tennessee seeing a 24 percent increase in their utility bills. These policies are project to eliminate 1.4 million jobs, and those people will no longer be paying taxes any more and will now be sucking down government benefits, all thanks to these policies pushed by Democratic bureaucrats employed by a Democratic President supervised by Democrats in the House and the Senate and supported by Democratic unions and a Democratic media. They are responsible for these bad policies- these aren’t Republican or conservative or Bush or tea-party policies that are killing jobs and destroying the middle-class- they are Democratic policies.

When a party pushes for policies that achieve little good at the cost of a great number of negatives, it doesn’t matter how much spinning they do and it really doesn’t matter how good or bad the individual candidates are who they are running against- that party needs to be thrown out of power until they learn just how much damage their policies do to the life, liberty, and property of the great people of the United States of America.

Green Energy Is Burning Up Your Green $$$

Share

Obama’s insane energy policy is burning a hole through the American’s family budget. At the same time, our government is burning through our tax dollars while putting our future generations deeper and deeper in debt.

How are Americans reacting to this insanity? That I can tell, there is almost no reaction from Main Street America. The reason, I think, is obvious.  The average American is being battered about like a ball in a pin ball machine by the multitude of negative impacts their government’s policies are having on them. It is almost impossible for anyone to focus on one bad policy long enough before another one smacks them from behind. We bloggers, on the other hand,  are able to sift through numerous issues each day and decide to write about one of them. In that fashion, I decided that today I would write about the absurdity of Obama’s “Green” energy policies.

What The Obama Administration Won’t Tell You About Solar Power is the title of a recent article at The Daley Gator, via Big Peace,  which begs for attention that it is not likely to get. So, I will do my humble best to help raise awareness on this important issue. Here are some of the highlights:

On Friday, Secretary of the Interior Salazar praised a new solar project in California, expected to be the largest in the world, as a major milestone in fulfilling President Obama’s promise to expand renewable energy.[i] The first phase of the project, to be completed in 2013, is being supported by a U.S. Department of Energy $2.1 billion loan guarantee. The 1,000-megawatt Blythe Solar Power Project in Riverside County, California claims to be able to power between 300,000 and 750,000 homes and create 1,000 temporary jobs and about 200 permanent jobs. The truth is that solar power alone will dependably serve very few homes because it is too unreliable but will cost up to 5 times as much as the cheapest form of electrical generation. Consumers, businesses, and the taxpayer will suffer.

Of course, Secretary Salazar does not tell the public that this solar plant will provide only a small fraction of the power that a 1,000 megawatt fossil fuel or nuclear plant would provide. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), a new solar thermal plant has an average capacity factor of only 18 percent, which compares to a new natural gas combined cycle plant at 87 percent, a new coal-fired plant at 85 percent and a new nuclear plant at 90 percent.

Think about for a second or two, my friends. A capacity factor of only 18 frigging percent. This is twenty-first century progress?

And, the capital cost compared to conventional generating plants of the same size:

Not only is the annual production less but the cost of the solar plant is much higher. According to the EIA’s analysis of the cost of new generating plants which begin producing power in 2016, the projected capital cost of a solar thermal power plant excluding finance charges is $4,692 per kilowatt compared to $2,844 per kilowatt for a dual-unit coal-fired plant and $978 per kilowatt for a natural-gas combined cycle plant. [iv] So, the cost for a 1,000 megawatt solar plant would be $4.7 billion dollars, a coal-fired plant would be $2.8 billion, and a natural gas combined cycle plant would be just under $1 billion.

What about the relative production costs?

* solar thermal, 31.2 cents per kilowatt hour,
* coal, 9.5 cents per kilowatt hour,
* natural gas combined cycle, 6.2 cents per kilowatt hour, and
* nuclear, 11.4 cents per kilowatt hour.

When I look at these numbers my blood starts to boil. Our government (well maybe it’s not our government but Obama’s government) is promoting and subsidising solar energy at a cost of 31.2 cents per kilowatt-hour while impeding development of our humongous gas reserves, which could be used to produce energy at not 6.2 cent per kilowatt-hour but something even less. If private industry had the freedom to develop our gas reserves, the unit cost of that gas would be significantly less than it is today.

So, the lucky citizens of California will be paying through the nose for their electrical energy. (That ought to really help the sales of the Chevy Volt.) But don’t worry. I’m sure it wong belong when everyone will have the chance to watch their Green$$$ being burnt up by a Obama Green Energy Plant near you.

Well, that’s what I’m thinking. What are your thoughts?

End All Energy Production?

Share

On Wednesday, August 6, 2008 I wrote:

As I listened to Obama talk about his energy visions for the future, I imagined what it would be like to live in a world that is cured of it’s oil addiction- a world where there is no power generated by fossil fuels, and instead water and wind power the world. Ahh, indeed- the change we need… windmill from ancient Rhodes, waterwheel from Roman Spain…

After two years of an Obama Presidency and Democrats in Congress, it appears that the world’s chief sources of large-scale energy production — coal, oil and nuclear power — all are becoming increasingly unsafe and unproductive, possibly moving us back to the future of windmills and waterwheels. Liberals and Democrats have seized on the Upper Big Branch coal mine explosion in West Virginia, the Deepwater Horizon blowout and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and the unfolding nuclear crisis in Japan, to dramatize the dangers of conventional power generation and push for more regulation, taxes, and government control over these industries while simultaneously diverting large amounts of taxpayer money to politically-connected companies who dutifully pray at the alter of the Green God.

The winners of this war on coal, oil, and nuclear are the Al Gore’s of the world, who make big money selling government false promises and inefficient power generation, and every set-back or disaster in the coal, oil, and nuclear world are met with happy glee from the government agents transferring wealth from productive, job creating energy businesses to unproductive, job killing green energy politically-connected firms.

The continued support for Democrats marks the beginning of the end of energy production and the voluntarily suicide of a nation’s ability to power itself, on a level not seen since the Xhosa Prophetess Nongqawuse convinced her tribe that it must destroy all their crops and kill their cattle so that they might progress as a society and be more powerful and happy. Sadly, much like Al Gore, following the advice of Nongqawuse only resulted in a calamity of staggering proportions for the Xhosa people, as it will be in our nation if we don’t continue to drill for oil, mine for coal, and build nuclear reactors.

The ‘woes of Japan’ are a wake-up call for our nation- a nuclear reactor that was built 40 years ago can withstand a 8.9 earthquake, tsunami, and electrical problems and still keep generating power- surely we can build better, more efficient, more safe nuclear power plants here in America to power our nation and improve our national security. The biggest barrier is liberals, Democrats, and their uneducated unwashed mass of interest groups who in their ignorance and foolishness would drag us back to less prosperous times, if we let them.
