Reagan once said that when you give government the power to give you something, you also give government the power to take it away. This statement is all the more prophetic when you take a look at what is going on in medical care.
In 2008, a US District Court ruled that a treating doctor is the most qualified person to make medical decisions regarding the care of a patient. The reaction of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama? They’re appealing to a higher court! Here’s some more from Redstate.
Callie’s mother filed suit in 2007, arguing that the state had no right to contradict the orders of her personal physician and limit her treatment. However, because Callie receives her medical treatment under Medicaid, the joint federal-state administered health coverage program for low-income individuals and families, Georgia officials argued that Callie’s care was subject to rationing, as state bureaucrats’ need to ensure Medicaid resources were allocated “fairly” superseded her doctor’s care prescription or her personal medical needs.
On June 4, 2008, U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash ruled that Callie’s doctor, not state bureaucrats, had the right to prescribe just what medical treatment and care his patient required. Georgia was ordered to raise Callie’s skilled home nursing care back up to 94 hours a week, as prescribed by her doctor.
Note the use of the word “fairly,” or should we say “faily!” You’ll be hearing this more and more under the messiah SPENDULUS MAXIMUS. That will be the rationale when they take from you, and give to another. Don’t forget the billions that will disappear in waste and bureaucracy in between (or are those synonymous?).
From state governments to the federal legislators and bureaucrats who had a hand in writing and passing President Barack Obama’s 2009 “stimulus” bill, more and more officials are beginning to make the public argument that it is not a trained doctor with years of experience and personal knowledge of a patient’s medical history and needs who should have final say when it comes to patient diagnoses and prescriptions, but some nameless, faceless bureaucrat inhabiting a cubicle in some nondescript government building, with nothing but an agency-developed cost-effectiveness spreadsheet to guide them in determining what is and is not medically appropriate or necessary for every patient seen within their jurisdiction.
The case currently being decided in Atlanta, Moore v. Medows, is evidence of this. In oral argument before a panel of the 11th Circuit on March 24, attorney Robert Highsmith contended that, while bureaucrats “will consider doctors’ determinations,” the “final arbiter” of medical decisions is “the state.”
Notice that the state says nothing about the patient’s health, well being, or recovery. They only seem to talk about cost. Isn’t that what they complain about with the insurance companies? Don’t they bring out sad tales of people that were screwed over by their private insurance companies? Yet, when states are asked to pay themselves, they act IN THE SAME EXACT WAY? Makes you think, doesn’t it? Is it about treating patients, or is it about POWER? Should you be afraid of the comment that the final arbiter is the state? ABSOFREAKINTUTELY!
The thrust of the states’ argument is summed up in a brief written by the attorneys representing the state of Florida in the case. “Left to their own devices,” they write, doctors “advocate for their patients” – something the apparently resented by state governments for its interference in the execution of their cost-effectiveness analyses.
Those dirty, EVIL, @#$%@#!!! They ADVOCATE FOR THEIR PATIENTS? This will not be tolerated in the new order!! OK, some pinhead in a cubicle will be overruling a doctor, who is better trained, better qualified, and actually knows and has examined the patient? And three states are going to court to defend this idiocy? You better believe that all fifty states are watching this closely, because the implications are pretty huge. Just remember that minions of the messiah are already saying things like “rationing, fairness,” and “hard decisions.”
So how does this all work in the Liberal Zone? We’ll let’s take a look…
Hi! It’s me, Winston, again. My grandmother is very sick. Her doctor says that she can be cured, but the treatment is very expensive, so we have to get permission from the commissar in charge of medical treatments. I have to log in to the messiahnet to talk to the commissar.
Working…
“Communication is monitored at all times. All hail the messiah!”
3 hours later…
Commissar: Greetings Comrade, ALL HAIL THE MESSIAH!
Winston: ALL HAIL THE MESSIAH! Commissar, my grandmother is very ill, the doctor says that there are treatments…
Commissar: Patience Comrade Winston, let me access your grandmother’s records…
2 weeks later….
Commissar: I see now Winston, your grandmother does have a serious condition. I also see that she was once discovered to have not hailed the messiah a a public event. Uh-oh, she once attended a religious service. Hmm, he father once owned a gun. Oh dear, she subscribed to the Conservative Hideout. Thank the messiah that HE went to a camp. That was a terrorist blog! Very interesting…
Winston: But Commissar, what does this have to do with her treatment?
Commissar: Everything Comrade Winston! We have comprehensive records on everyone. We must make sure that the resources of the state are distributed fairly, and by our criteria. EVERYTHING is taken into consideration, except the opinion of her doctor. They can’t be trusted!
Winston: Will the state pay for her treatment?
Commissar: I must consult with the regional soviet. I will be in touch soon.
15 days later…
Commissar: I have good news for you Comrade. We will not pay for your grandmother’s treatment.
Winston: How is this good news?
Commissar: Comrade Winston, your grandmother has the honor and duty to die for the greater good. She is collecting social security, is she not? She is also on many medications that are at the state’s expense. If she dies, these resources can be re-allocated to others. Also, she has showed signs of not having complete loyalty to the messiah. That comrade, cannot be tolerated.
Winston: She should die because of that?
Commissar: Yes comrade. The new order requires that we all make sacrifices and make hard decisions for the greater good. Any dissent means that the order does not function as well as it could. That, and she’s old, she can no longer make a meaningful contribution to the state. We will be sending her an autographed photo of the messiah, and a letter of thanks from the messiah himself.
Winston: Commissar, is it fair that messiah’s dog was turned into a cyborg to prolong his life, but my grandmother is being left to die?
Commissar: Comrade Winston, you’re showing signs of independent thought. I hope that you are not in need of re-education, are you?
Winston: (OH NO! That means a camp!!) No Commissar, I understand that the needs of the state outweigh the needs of a petty individual. That is the greatest accomplishment of the messiah’s change.
Commissar: That’s better Comrade Winston. Tell your grandmother that the state honors her sacrifice.
Well, I guess I’m off to a camp at some point, but then again, DHS thinks I’m a DANGEROUS TERRORIST! What am I to expect?!
