I’m still lamenting the loss of Pontiac. Ever since my father owned a 65 Catalina when I was very young, I’ve been a fan. Pontiac became the sporty division of GM, and created some classics. They created the muscle car movement with the GTO. They made the wildly successful Firebird/Trans Am line, and tried to be an innovator. When GM decided to kill off the brand, I declared a day of mourning.
OK, I’m a car nut. So, every once in a while I do a post on something automotive. Since Pontiac is officially kaput, I thought that we’d never see a new Firebird/Trans Am line. They were always badge-engineered Camaros anyway (or was it the other way around?).
Then, some bright guy decided to make a Trans Am conversion out of the new Camaro. Her’s some pics and a video.
Now, as a Conservative, I’m hesitant to buy anything from Gubbermint Motors, but the whole Camaro thing has been confusing me. (Fear not, my friends, I haven’t the money to buy one anyway!) At any rate, this shows how creativity and what’s left of the free market will provide what the government has taken away.
With the economy as it is, it is unknown if many of these cars will be made, but it does show that the spirit of Pontiac lives on.
Long live the “screamin’ chicken!”
That being said, if you’d like a classic F-body, you can get one of those as well. It’ll take some cash, and lots of hands-on work, but you can get it done.

I bought my ‘69 Camaro in 1985 when I was 16. I had to sell it a couple years ago when money got tight. It was barely running anyway, which was typical for the 20 or so years I owned it. As Allahpundit would say: Heartache.
I daydream about getting out the catalogs and ordering ALL the parts to build a brand new one from scratch. Someday….
If I’m remembering correctly, as long as you have an original subframe, you can put all new parts around it, and you have a legal (not new) car.
It dream of that too. What kind of crate motor would you use?
Wow, nice car. It wouldn’t be safe for me to have one of those. If it can drive fast, I am going to drive it fast, plain and simple.
My wife pines for a Grand Torino, like she had in high school. She gets online every once in a while and looks at pictures of restored ones.
I read an article about a car being built from scratch. Some date DMVs will allow the body serial number to be used as a VIN and treat it like a kit car. Other states aren’t so flexible.
As for motor? Since this project is still in daydream stage, I can dream big. Which means I’m not sure. Probably a stroker smallblock w/ EFI. I’m so sick of messing with float levels and power valves and all the carb junk. But maybe I’ll trip over a big pile of cash and go for an all-aluminum big block. But for now I just have to keep up with the monthly bills.
Thanks for the clarification on the body issue.
I’m with you on the small block. And, Carbs can be a pain. I know when from about those cars, they handled like crap with the big block. They were never designed to carry that much weight up front. A good small block would be enough for me.
That’s a beautiful car … but I’ll never buy anything from GM or Chrysler again.
I know Dave, it just sucks. I fell in love with that car when I first saw pictures of the concept.
Awesome post Matt! My first car was a ‘71 Ford LTD with a massive (by today’s standards anyway) 400 cubic inch Cleveland, which was the 351 Cleveland Mustang motor just with a longer stroke. My second favorite car from my youth was another ‘71. This one a Buick Skylark California Coupe with the venerable Chevy 350 in it. At the risk of sounding old – They just don’t make cars like that anymore. *sigh*
BTW, when you win the lottery, go ahead and purchase this Trans Am. The Camaro was designed before GM was bought by the government and it will probably be the last car designed by the real, free GM.
Another great concept car: The Chevy 789 Coupe. So named for styling elements from the ‘57, ‘58 & ‘59 Chevys.
That is a cool concept. My favorite old car was a 78 Thunderbird with a 351M. Mileage sucked, but it got me through grad school. My friends suggested that I put pontoons on it and sell it to the Navy, but I held on to it until it pretty much fell apart.
I’ve never seen that 789 coupe. Looks like a C-5 or C-6 Corvette with a major body kit, pretty cool.
I think the website for it says it’s for the C6. I remember a kit for the C5 that made the car look like a C1, but I don’t think it looked this good.
I agree, the C-5 to C-1 kit didn’t look right. This kit looks good but if I owned a C-6 I don’t think I would want to change it because they look pretty good already.
Could I have one of these?
I used to have an F-Body Trans Am…I’m loving this one!
