Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the same that has said “I hereby accuse the North American empire of being the biggest menace to our planet”, and “The U.S. throws stones to Latin America”, has acquired thousands of missiles from the Russian government to supposedly aid Venezuela in a conflict with Colombia. However, as reported by the Associated Press, Colombia and Washington deny having any plans to attack Venezuela, but Chavez argues they are plotting together a military offensive against Venezuela. He argues that the weapons accumulation is merely a precautionary measure.
With President Chavez’s long history of hate towards the USA, one has to wonder why our supposed friend Russia would provide him with such a weapons cache. And this is just a tip of the iceberg in that which Russia has provided Venezuela and is yet to provide in the future. They have in the past, since 2005, allowed Chavez to purchase 24 Sukhoi fighter jets, dozens of attack helicopters and 100,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles. And soon the Venezuelan President will be also acquiring Russian tanks. The Russian government has given him a $2.2 billion dollar line of credit in which Chavez can use to continue to purchase military arms.
This may be looking too far into it, but could Russia be arming this dictator for their own purposes? It seems like a substantial amount of weaponry for a battle with Colombia. There is no doubt that both have a distaste for the United States of America. Hugo Chavez himself has said, “We must tell the world, down with the U.S. empire.” And then with Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, being an ex-head of the KGB just before the fall of the soviet union calling the shots, who knows what the real intentions of these two countries are really. Here lately Russia has been siding with our enemies around the world more often than not, and like the old saying goes, “actions speak louder than words.”

Just a few articles about Russia siding with U.S. enemies (sometimes they side with the U.S. then turn around and do the opposite, like not wanting to impose further sanctions):

Well said Marie. The Russians are trying to flex their muscles, and are working against us to do so. Chavez is playing old fashioned communist propaganda games, in accusing us and allies of doing what they themselves are doing. The chances of Obama invading anyone are zilch, zero, or is there an option that is less than zero? However, Chavez has moved troops to the border, and are supporting thugs to disrupt neighboring countries. He tried to help a would be dictator take over Honduras, and is going to be a thug in the entire region.
All of this is classic communism. If the people do not choose it, it will be applied by force.
Obama will do nothing as he has in Afghanistan (the troops he recently approved is still not what is needed) and Iraq. I am sure that he sees the doings of Russia and Venezuela, if not, then he is even more clueless than I thought.
Ah, Hugo just wants the bombs to kill all the religious people, so he build a new man … with this: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/11/world/americas/11venez.html
Chavez has, what seems to me, a very Hitler mentality with Hitler ambitions but a lack of means to really carry it out without the aid of a bigger country’s military. He is supposedly trying to create this “new man” by distributing the books Social Movements in the 21st Century, Culturecide: a history of Argentine education 1966-2004 and Empire’s Spider Web, a critique of US foreign policy. And with so many liberal quoting and looking to Chavez’s ideology I wonder if this is something similar to what we may see in the future. I hope not.
Obama will keep his head in the sand about this. After all Chavez is loved by liberals from Washington to Hollywood. The liberals in Washington want to keep spending less and less on military while our enemies spend more and more. Don’t forget Obama said he wants to fundamentally change America. How for is he willing to go?
I do wonder what is behind the weakening of the U.S. military. At what point will we become vulnerable to these types of communists and dictators? Hopefully we can get enough conservatives in office in 2010 to offset the damage that is being done by the Obama administration, and then I pray that we get a conservative President in 2012 to work on undoing the liberal agenda.
I get the impression that the left thinks it unfair that we are so powerful, and that we shouldn’t be able to defend ourselves.
It really almost seems that way. I think it may go along the same lines as the “spread the wealth” idea. I don’t know what the justification could actually be. Who in their right (of course, their left
) mind couldn’t see that without the ability to maintain the status quo we lose the “super power” standing? It’s obviously beyond me.
The ebb and flow of communism in the latin american countries has been interesting to watch over my many years. One year communism is up and next year down. At his moment in history the tide is flowing in its direction and the strong man in Venezula is reaping the benefits of its revival, but tommorrow will bring something else. These unstaple countries simply cannot make up their minds. Individual leaders down south seem to have more sway than political movements. We will have to watch. We do need another Reagan and Ollie North to support our side in these conflicts.
Communism itself fundamentally doesn’t work. But there are those so hungry for power that will continue to try throughout time to impose it. My fear is the damage it does during it’s times of strength. We can see from history that the countries that have had communism/socialism implemented take many decades to even begin to recover. Thank you for your insight.
I must say that I do agree for the most part with what everyone is saying about Chavez, Russia, and the Obama Administration.I can’t forget what I learned about in history class about what went on in the 1930′s that lead up to World War II. Many in that day thought that Hitler and Germany could never defeat Britain or France. Everybody though that Germany was too weak of a nation to compete with other Western countries militarily. Look what happened, German quickly took advantage of this mentality and overtook their own country with an iron fist, then moved on to quietly strengthen his military capabilities. After forming an alliance with the Soviet Union (go figure), they attacked Poland. Soon most of France and Europe fell victim to the better prepared German army. Even the British in France had to flee to the English Channel to safety.
This looks a bit like 1930′s all over again. Remember, if people don’t learn from the past then history is bound to repeat itself. The only thing that helped the rest of the world at the time was the U.S. getting involved. If we weaken our military and act as France did, then who will be our “U.S. Army” to save our nation?
