CH 2.0 State of the Union Wrap Up

Well, here we are.  The State of the Union Speech is over, and here are some highlights.

“When I took office…” Blame Bush

“Bad behavior on Wall Street…” You mean, by doing what the government ordered them to do?

“People are “Tired of partisanship…and want us to work through our problems” You mean, by locking the Republicans out of the Health Care debates?

“Banks caused the Crisis…” By doing what the government ordered them to do.

“I hated the bank bailout…” No sir, you LOVED the control it gave you, and continues to do so.

“Markets are now stabilized…” Really??

“Cut Taxes for 95% of all Americans…” OK, you mean the 15 bucks a pay we get.  Which is enough to buy happy meals for three?  Which about 15 million Americans will have to pay back?  Which isn’t a tax cut at all?

“Haven’t raised taxes…” Not for a lack of trying Mr. President.

“2 million people working that wouldn’t be otherwise…” Lol.  You mean in all the Zip Codes and Congressional District that don’t exist?  Or do you mean the places that said they saved and created more jobs than they have employees?

He asked for a “Jobs Bill.”  Porkulus 2.0!  We’ve already heard the reports that it’s the second porkulus.  You’re just calling to something else.  Putting lipstick on the old Porkulus, are you?

“Government can created the conditions…(that lead to job growth)” You mean by decreased government and taxes?  Or, do you mean a handout?  One that will undoubtedly come with many strings attached?

“Small business tax credit…” Why not just cut their taxes?

“Eliminate Capital Gains tax for small businesses…” But will you really do it?  Or will this be like tort reform?

“Clean energy rebates…” Why not just lower their taxes?

“Cut breaks for businesses that move overseas…” Why not change the conditions that lead them to leave in the first place?

This one is significant.

“We’ve been waiting for decades to revamp our country…” Is this a reference to Fabian Socialism, or what the “progressives” have been proposing for a century now?  In other words, is this the elitist nanny state?

“As hard as it may be, it’s time for serious financial reform…” You mean, you’re going to restore the lending standards that were stripped by the CRA?  You know, that set of laws that made the banks make loans to people that couldn’t afford them?

“I’m not interested in punishing the banks.” Funny that you are then.  Did you expect us to forget your rhetoric?

Energy:

It gets interesting here.

He makes a concession on nuclear power.  He throws in offshore development.  Then he throws in clean coal and climate.  That’s the set-up.  He gives the Republicans a couple of crumbs, and then ties it to Cap and Trade.  If the Republicans say no to Cap and Trade, the Dems will say the Republicans are being paid off by big oil and are the party of “no.”  That, and if the Republicans agree, the Nuke plants will never be built, and the permits for drilling will never be issued.  Cap and Trade, however, will bankrupt millions of us.

“Overwhelming evidence on Climate Change…” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  Hiding the decline, are we?

Trade:

Double exports????  How in the hell are you going to do that?  Most of you policies, as well as your union goon buddies, will close more businesses, and send more jobs overseas than anything else.  Nice proposal, but not a single plan to implement it.

On Education:

“..cannot depend on where one lives…expand reform to all 50 states.” Folks, this means that the federal government will control education in all 50 states.   Beware, and look at any educational initiatives very carefully.

“…Cutting costs at universities.” Lol, like the unions will allow that!  Hollow words sir!

Health Care:

He portrays the insurance companies as evil.

“Will save a trillion dollars over 20 years…” Just like Medicare didn’t run several hundred billion dollars over it’s estimates…right?

“The longer the debate, the more skeptical people became.” Well sir, the people got to see what was in the Democratic plans (in spite of their best efforts to conceal them), and they saw the methods by which the bills were passed.  That’s why you wanted it passed before the August recess, isn’t it?  The longer it lasted, the more we saw.  The more we saw, the more we hated it!

Deficit:

Tried to state that tax cuts are spending.  The government cannot spend what it does not collect.  Also, tax cuts increase tax revenue.

Misstated Clinton’s surplus, which was projected, and exaggerated Bush’s deficit (actually, he more than doubled it.)  Also, he failed to mention that he tripled Bush’s largest deficit in one year.

“Took a trillion dollars to rescue the economy.” 10% unemployment?  Home sales having record drops?  Businesses scared to death to do anything for fear of taxation?  If this is “rescued,” I truly fear what failure is!

“spending freeze…cutting programs that do not work…” Wow, you’re going to close most of DC?  Can you start with the Department of Education and Head Start?  Neither have ever been demonstrated to work.  Don’t worry, I won’t hold my breath.

Bipartisan Commission…The Senate has already refused this.  The President promises an executive order to achieve this (Later today there’ll be a post from Jackie on executive orders.  It’s a must read!)  I’d also add that there would have been a full uproar if Bush had suggested this.  He’s be accused of starving children and freezing the old folks.  Or, is that freezing children and starving old folks?  I always get that confused!

Tax cuts

“That’s what we did for 8 years…” No it isn’t.  Spending wasn’t contained.

“That’s what got us into this crisis” Again, no it isn’t.  Shifty lending practices, that were mandated by the government created the mess.  And when Bush tried to correct it, the Democrats resisted.  Bush’s flaw was not using the full powers of his office, and the Republicans backing down from the noisy Dems.  It could have been prevented.  The Dems caused it, and the Republicans did not stop it when they saw it coming.

“…do our work openly.” That would be a change!

“I do not think elections should be bough by our most powerful interests.” Like the unions?  Oops!  We’re not supposed to mention THEM, are we?

BTW, POTUS lied about the international aspect.   FOX showed Justice Alito mouthing “that’s not true,” when the POTUS said this.  I wonder if MSNBC will show that?

Earmark reform???  You mean like the 9000 you signed in ONE BILL?

Posting bills on line?  That would be a change as well.

“…like every day is election day.” Just like you’ve done through all of 2009?

“…sowing distrust among citizens…” You mean, by exposing what’s in legislation, what your appointees have said and written, and by pointing out your broken promises?

“…sent here top serve our citizens, not your own ambitions.” While I could jump all over that from several different directions, let me say this, “you were sent here to govern, not enslave.”

And finally…

“I’m not interested in re-litigating the past.” Funny you should blame Bush, the banks (several times), and the SCOTUS, and then say this.

So, the good points?  He is well spoken.  The speech was well paced and planned.

The down side?  Well, most of the content.  This ran like any campaign speech, and it was structured similarly to the health care speech he gave to Congress last year.  The question is, will the speech be filled with more broken promises, as the others were?

Also, he doesn’t seem to realize that the public has repeatedly repudiated him.  Town Halls, Tea Parties, and multiple electoral losses have not seemed to have made an impression on him.  I didn’t get a real impression that he was moving to the center.  If this does not change, it is good news for Conservatives.  Obama will draw the contrast for us.  He’ll help us in November more than he realizes.

On an unrelated topic.   Tonight was the very first time that Sarah Palin impressed me in the least.  I saw her on the “pre-game”, on Greta, and on Hannity.  Nothing seemed scripted, she didn’t seem to be reading off of anything, and I thought she had a good grasp of Conservative issues.  She did mispronounce a couple of things on Hannity, but it didn’t seem egregious.  Those of you that read here regularly know that I haven’t been a fan of Palin, but if she keeps this up, I might change my mind.

About the Author

Matt I believe that future generations should have the same opportunities that myself, and those that came before me, had. My parents taught me that I could do anything I wanted to do. I don’t want to have to tell my daughter, “You can do whatever the government tells you to do.” We are at a crossroads in this country; are we going to be free, or are we going to be slaves to the nanny state. I choose freedom.
